How do you get your wheels to stick out past the fenders?

I’m new to everything trucks, so if this question is redundant I don’t mean for it to.

I wanted to get a lift and tires for my truck, but I’ve been seeing a few Tacoma’s that have the tires sticking out past the fenders and thought it looked really cool.

I didn’t know if you had to run a wider tire, wheel spacers or another specific method to make them stick out.

Also, I am wanting to do a 3” lift and I saw the RRW wheels that look really cool, so I was planning to buy them, and fit a large as I could 33-35” tire.

More reading would probably be in my best interest but wanted to pose a question for the experts

I’m not an expert but I would say a combination of offset rim, wheel spacer and tire width..

Definitely keep researching but in the meantime there are multiple different ways to get your “tires to stick outside of your fenders”. Spacers, wheel width, taking you fender flares off. Lol.

I think getting your tires to exceed the body lines should be something to worry about later. It can come at a price when it comes to clearance, rubbing etc. Right now worry about the figuring out the necessary lift height for the size tire you want and purchasing good reliable parts before jumping into wheels and tires so you have time to research pros and cons.

Pretty sure most Tacoma’s on this site that have that have long travel suspension.

I appreciate the insight. I’m back and forth on spacers, seems like it could be problematic similar to a spaced lift.

I’d rather do it once the right way or not at all and ensure the longevity of the truck while sacrificing some aesthetics

First, know if its legal in your state to run tires larger than your fenders.

Second, understand you will do damage to your paint job by running tires that stick out from your fenders.

Don’t use wheel spacers. Get a wider tire like a 285. However you will need to run a lift and maybe do some cutting to avoid rubbing.

Originally not Expo AF! Kinda Expo AF now...lame.
Aftermarket rims comes with typically more offset than factory. Factory offsets on 3rd gens are usually around +15mm to +25mm. I put -12mm offset rims on my wife's 4Runner and the tires are about flush with the tops of the fenders.

What this will do long term.
    1. Possibly cause additional stress on wheel bearings.
    2. Throw stuff ALL over the sides of your truck.
    3. Allow tire to touch an obstacle before the truck does.
    4. Wider stance, more aggressive looking to some.
    5. Increases chance of rubbing the fenders and inner linings.

Some good, some bad, I liked the wheels. They were lighter and looked good.

    Research unsprung weight vs MPG.

If you stick 33's and 35's on your Tacoma you're gonna want to regear too, and keep the tire weight down or you'll really hate how it changes your ride, and acceleration.

How far out do you want them to be?

    This is a 16x8.5 with -6mm offset on 265/75/16s.

Remember, if you stick out to far you might start throwing rocks/pebbles past your fender if you hit trails.

I dunno. I'm not an expert by any measure, but it seems like a stretch to imply that regearing is needed for 33s. Sure, it might be BETTER, but that's still a pretty small tire.

But like I said, not an expert.

As far as wheels go, might wanna just skip the spacers and find a wheel that has the offset/protrusion that you like. I have those generic OEM 4runner rims, and they have a slightly wider stance (about an inch, if I recall correctly) without being too bro-ish (I'm a 45 year-old OLD man and I'd look silly driving around in a kid's bro-mobile).

Very well said. I would add that you could expect to frequently replace mirrors to that list as well as it is illegal in many states to have tires that extend beyond the body without mud flaps. Folk behind you are likely to get blasted with rocks as well.

People will use hub spacers to get the rim/tire to stick out more if you're into that

This is -12 offset with stock Goodyear Wrangler OR tire. These wheels are also 8" wide, vs the 7" stock. Both offset and width can dramatically change the amount the tire sticks out.

I live in New York City suburbs, I work in Brooklyn. If the they were to enforce illegal vehicle modifications they would have to hire a secondary police force because no one's car here is legal and that would be their only job.

The easiest way to get a lot of wheel out of the fender is long travel suspension. Mine is +3.5 on each side, Maxtrac spindles adding .75 on each side, Method 17x9 wheels with -44 offset and 12.50 wide tires. My rear end has 2" wheel spacers which is the next easiest way for extra width. When looking at wheels, less backspacing (mine are 3.5) and more negative offset will make it stick out farther. For reference my truck is 90" wide. One picture with fiberglass fenders and one without

Do your research before you do anything, every modification comes at a price. There is a tremendous amount of information on here regarding lifts and tires, wheels. A stock Tacoma is very capable off road vehicle .
