I've owned my Tacoma for 17 years, but just now joined TW.

I've kept my 2001 pretty much stock and love it, but I bought a travel trailer (T@b) this summer. I have enough horsepower for my taste, but the suspension is struggling a little so I started to dig around the forum. There is a ton of good stuff here. I probably should have given it a read before I went and bought the trailer, but I'm learning now. Lots of wisdom here.

    Thanks everyone for your contributions.

Slap some Firestone or Air Lift bags on there and you should be all set. Just be sure to plumb them individually.

Run a temp probe to keep an eye on transmission fluid temps. The Tacoma can run pretty hot while towing, so make sure you watch temps to prevent damage.

Other than that have fun! Do yourself a favor and get some books on tape so you’ll have something to listen to as you chug up to the Eisenhower at 25 :D

Oh, and just FYI, not sure how big your travel trailer is, but a weight distribution hitch with sway control will make towing a much more comfortable experience.

Your advice pretty much matches my research. I'm planning on the Firestone, but I've also been advised that I probably should refresh the shocks (Bilstein 4600), rear leaf springs (OEM) and I'm guessing the front coil springs too (not sure, but I think this may be OEM also). It makes sense to me that after 17 years and 87,000 miles (I don't drive much), I probably should refresh if I'm going to start trailering.

I was ignorant of the transmission heat issue until I started to read the forum. It looks like I should get an aux cooler and gauge.

As for taking it easy over the passes, the Tacoma takes care of my speed on the climbs and my wife keeps a close watch on the descents! :argue:

I’ll also hop in the ring and suggest firestone airbags. I have them on my taco for my camper setup.

If your going to refresh your suspension I’d go with 5100s over 4600s

I'll have another look at that. It was my understanding that the 4600s were good if you have no plans to raise the truck.
