for those of you that have done this, prior to removing the steering wheel, is the clock spring supposed to be loose? It doesn't spin, but i can reach it w/ a couple fingers and wiggle it up and down a good bit. seems odd, just wondering if that's how its supposed to be...?

Edit: i'm asking because my cruise control stopped working a while ago. I've replaced the switch stalk on the steering column with no success. Checked all fuses, all good. I don't have steering wheel audio controls, only horn, air bag, and CC. Everything works except for the CC. Reading around on this site has brought me to the clock spring being the culprit, despite the dealership telling me that if something was wrong w/ the clock spring, the horn wouldn't work and the airbag light would be on (which I believe is incorrect). 2006.

The clockspring turns with the steering wheel. If you are trying to spin it without turning the steering wheel it should not spin

Are you sure your SRS code meant the clockspring was bad?

Wasn't trying to spin or rotate it but i could get a finger on it and wiggle it a little bit and it seemed looser than it should be. I'm gonna replace it this weekend so I'll find out one way or another.

I’m not sure actually. Darn it. I think it is the connection underneath the seat or something ughhh

Check the code and it'll tell you exactly. Note: a normal scantool will not read ABS or SRS codes.

Mine too, on the 1st clock spring replacement last year which fixed my cruise control. Then, this year my horn stopped working. After checking the relay and fuses, the clock spring was the only component left to check. Replaced it and now everything works. Vendor was Blue Elf on Amazon.

Just followed this write-up, and it worked pretty well. Only hiccups were that mine has the radio controls, so more wires to unplug, and the silly little cover plates in the very beginning were annoying to get off. Other than that, everything went easily and took less than an hour.

I haven't had a chance to test the cruise yet, but I'll update this post once I test everything out and verify that it works.

    Thanks, OP!!!!

I had a similar issue with mine, the lights on the steering controls worked only when the the wheel was turned to 30*. The control functions i.e. volume and mode worked occasionally. That said the horn always worked as well as CC. I replaced the clockspring and all is operational. I did disconnect the battery prior to doing this, I did not want the air bag to explode in my face.

My horn stopped working and the airbag light came on after replacing the lower intermediate steering shaft and rack & pinion...even with the seatbelt through the steering wheel :annoyed:
    Cruise still works through

Have you seen photos of the inside of the clock spring - specifically the tape on the inside with the contacts? Some people have damaged leads across the entire tape, others have just one or two burned or rubbed through. Point being - its easy to see how you can lose just one while the other work. I'm going to dissect mine today and report my findings. The ONLY thing that stopped working on mine was the cruise, so I'm expecting to see most of the other copper leads intact.

I haven't but I'll be interested to hear what you find. I thought it was weird I didn't, or haven't yet lost my cruise. I did lose my steering wheel radio controls too.

Just got it all apart, and didn't see anything as bad as some have posted. I did find one section that appeared to be worn through on both sides, but it was on one of the copper strips. Maybe it was my problem...?
