This a 1GR-FE I have in my shop right now. Head gasket was replaced. They milled the heads approx. .3

Since then, rough idle, timing off.

The Toyota manual states it and I keep saying that you can not mill these heads, here is why...

Once you change the distance and angle between the Cam and the crank, timing will be off.

I know nothing about the 1GR but 300 thou!?! WTF would they mill so much! Probably only need to take off 15-20 thou to clean up a warped head.

I thought you could, you just have to have a custom thickness head gasket? @Torspd

.300" ? 300/1000? Holy crap. Here I was surprised I had to deck my 1968 block .045". You may be able to contact Cometic to see if they can make a +.300" (holy crap) head gasket set.

Probably has good compression now. Maybe you could look for a degree timing chain pulley and advance or retard the fam shaft timing.

I am hoping that OP meant to say .030" to remove a slight warp from driving while overheating. If that is the case, Cometic may be able to get the appropriate gasket with compression ring.
If indeed .300" was removed, OP really should just stop right now and get new heads instead of getting a shim set. Also, do not go back to that shop, they should have known better and not wasted your money.

This. There wouldn't be much of a combustion chamber remaining, if .3" were taken away.

And yes, if a few thousandths were taken away, that could be added back to the thickness of the head gasket/s.

My Bad, .03" just caught that. 2 to 1 ratio puts it off by about 1/16th of an inch as shown in pics. Sorry for confusion.

Contact Cometic and see if they offer a +.030" gasket set.

Could you post the citation where the manual says this?
    Is it the owner's manual?
    Factory Service Manual?
    Another manual?

It's stated in the Tacoma Factory Service Manual that only valves should be machined if not seated properly. If head does not meet spec must be replaced. Toyota Technician Cert. Training manual states not to mill.

It's late, I'll dig up which cert. training states this.

Factory Service Manual states like stated above, but I checked, I only have training manual 151 at the house, have to get the rest about milling heads at work tomorrow.

I have an on going lawsuit with Toyota, most of my docs are at my office.

As far as valves and Toyota training here is specific verification...

So just the milling itself will have the cam over retarded? Still don't see how .005 off of it would offer the timing that much to make it run bad. But well. So replacing the heads is the only option?
