    good morning!!
Just bought me a 2018 Tacoma trd off road. Filled the tank last night, went out started it this morning to warm up and when I returned the gauge said 6mpg? Drove it to the gym and economy gauge worked it’s way up to 8.5 mph?? Hope it’s getting better than that?

MPG's are going to read low if your not moving. Drive it for a few days and you should be getting right around 18-20 mixed.

Noticed that with mine for first tank or two of gas. Then MPG was right where I thought it would be. Wondering if part of this is the computer calibrating and learning everything

It takes a while for the drive train on 4wd to break in. You'll be getting better mileage at 10k than you will now.

If you let it 'warm up for an extended time that would have lowered the number on the dash.

You filled up, which reset the tank average. Then you parked it and let it warm up fro several minutes the next day. So much of the engine running time was going nowhere. If you had 200 miles on the tank with a 20 MPG average, you would have lost several 10ths of an MPG on the average. Idling kills MPG, so unless its really cold, like below 0°F, try to avoid it or minimize it. With the 0W20 oil, you don't need to let it warm up at all, just begin driving gently until the temp needle begins to move.

Reset the MPG read out and see what happens.

Toggle thru the different icons till you find it. Read owners manual if you
    can not find it.

Just drove my 80 year old father in laws 2018 limited and he said, “I don’t know what mpg I am getting, but I go a lot further on a tank than my Tundra!” I showed him how to check it on mfd display and it was 26.9 mpg, LOL! He lives in rural Iowa and doesn’t drive very fast. I have a 2016 sport and got that high once on a road trip, but since mods, 23 mpg hwy is the best.

While it's sitting in your driveway idling, you're getting 0 mpg, so of course that will drop the average fuel economy number.

is the gas station and the gym close to you? you will get low mpg on short trips on any gas engine vehicle. hybrid can get you high mpg on short trips.

My average over 12 months is in my fuelly badge below. Hand calculated. I've seen anywhere from 3 mpg to 32 mpg on any given trip.

Something is wrong with the sampling MPG in the taco 3G.
For first 7 miles I get 16.5 MPG and for the rest of 13 miles (20 total) I average 20.5 MPG.
    7 miles=16.5 MPG (cool...)
    13 miles =3.5 MPG (WTF...)
20 miles 20.5 MPG (Ah, OK...)
How often (time or distance) is sampling done by computer?

This has been mentioned and it is simple math really. Makes no difference if it is new Taco, Off road, limited, SR5, Corolla, Tundra etc

While truck is accelerating single digit to low 2 digit MPG depending on your driving habits. You are burning fuel to move the tires.
While truck is idling; warm-ups, stops, etc 0 mpg Burning fuel and going no place FAST
While truck is at speed and/or slowing 30(+) mpg Burning no fuel and still moving!! Welcome to ECU controlled fuel injection, AKA modern engine architecture.

Now here is the math part.. how much fuel did your burn from the time you started the truck until you turned it off? That is your Gallons
How far did you travel? There is your Miles. This is far easier math using an odometer and a gas pump to tell you how much fuel it took the travel the miles since last fill-up

Divide Miles/Gallons to get MPG easy-peasy.

IF I warm-up my truck, wait for a train, watch some old person try to park for 5 minutes before I can get past and only move 2 miles my MPG will be in the crapper. For that trip
On the other hand if I drive the highway at 55-60 for an hour or more I will have excellent MPG. For that trip

IF you constantly reset your MPG every time you look at average it will be 1 trip and will swing wildly based on traffic, weather, hurry, fuel mixture etc.

I reset my truck MPG each month and each time I have a big towing trip, for me this is a health check for the truck. Towing I expect 1st gen MPG or slightly less, meaning 12-14 depending on distance traveled, I got an average of 15.3-15.5 in my 1st gen. In month to month resets the MPG ave SHOULD be about the same, for me that is 19.5ish. If it rises or falls suddenly I know there is a problem and can address it. This is much like checking the oil, tire pressure (using a gauge not the dash), and manually (ok I use fuelly) calculating my MPG each tank.. again looking for constancy.

If you watch the Economy app screen you can see the sample rate.Go to then trip info and leave it there while driving. It is not displayed as X minutes or anything. Watch the frequency/interval it puts up a new "bar" on the graph. That is your sample rate.

Mine kept getting better for several thousand miles after it was new....Course, I did put in all Redline synthetic in the drive train at around 10k, that probably had something to do with better mileage....
