People talk big about Texas, like it is ALL pro gun, It really isn't... I would describe Texas as more "Gun tolerant"... I moved to Texas a few years back and have found that the gun laws here (in Texas) are actually more restrictive than in A LOT of other states. Texas barely passed Open Carry (with a permit) in the last couple years... And along with it, passed the 30.06/30.07 clause so business owners can post a 30.07 sign making open carry (or a 30.06 sign for concealed carry) a CRIME on their property. these signs are ALL OVER San Antonio and Austin... Not sure about other Texas cities but it makes carrying a firearm a PAIN IN THE ASS cause you have to take it on and off all over the place to remain legal.

Texas Gun laws kinda SUCK to be honest. we can still own most guns but they made it hard to carry them without hassle.

Arizona and Wyoming are A LOT more gun friendly states. Texas has Blue Cancer in Austin and it is spreading with every Californicated transplant we take in each year :(

Still more :oldglory:than CA though... for now...

If you are emotionally unstable and know you are prone to road rage, that only reflects on you. Carrying a firearm does not change whether or not I can conduct myself like a civilized human being.

Ideally, every state would be like AZ.

Exactly my point, OP mention his concern for not having his gun on a road rage incident.
and I will guess that 99.9% you can avoid a road rage incident.
So instead of asking a legal way to carry a gun in the car , better find a way on how to avoid a road rage road or how to manage anger.

Perhaps he is talking about him making a minor mistake and accidentally pissing someone off and THEM committing road rage and him being able to protect himself from some Psychopath who can't manage their anger?

Just a thought... It looks like you jumped right to thinking HE was wanting a gun for when HE commits road rage... :boom:

Since I don't know the facts, Some one have to take it that way ;)
You have a valid point but still most of the time a Road Rage can be avoided.

Most of the time... I was sitting at a light once in CA and witnessed an incident happen, lady inadvertantly cut off some gang banger at a light. She was stopped between a car in front of her and the bangers car. He got out started yelling. She was visibly shaken but had nowhere to go. He went back to his car grabbed a pipe, broke her window and dragged her out the broken window. 3 of us got out and helped her, but not before he hit her about 5 times with a steel pipe... luckily there were people there to help her but still in that situation she could have been killed if we didn't step in. She had no way to defend herself. Lots of scenarios where there is no way out and you have to fight to survive.

The point is that what ever the scenario the OP is while driving, per CA laws he can't have a loaded gun in his vehicle.

Hey guys, thanks for all the info here. I have a separate and unrelated question, but y'all seem like good peeps to ask so here goes.

If were considering to bring in an old pistol that I own, locked in my folks' safe in New Mexico, into California - what is the process for "registering" the damn thing? I hate that I even have to ask. This is seriously for home protection, and sounds like even for that purpose it has to be registered and if god forbid I had to use it unregistered, I would be the one in more trouble.

Any advice much appreciated. Happy new year!

Easy. “Your dad gave it to you”

bring it ink locked in a box and cable locked fir good measure. Then fill out the DOJ family transfer form. Boom.

You’ll have to take it into a gun shop and leave it for 10 days... Cali has a 10 day waiting period even for transfer’s. I bought a couple guns off my dad and had to leave them at the shop for 10 days.

Should be a great trip, especially if you can get out on the water at Powell. However, aren’t they both national parks and aren’t firearms banned in national parks?

There is some horrible advice here that could get you in trouble with the FEDS not just California. You need to go to calguns and get some proper advice. I'll drop my 2 cents below but take it with a grain of salt.

If the gun is yours and you've just been storing it in NM because you left it when you moved then I believe you can bring it into CA and register it within some time period (60 days?). If it was your parents and they gave it to you while you were both NM residents then it's your gun. No need for gun store. Note that it is not a crime in CA to posses an unregistered gun. It's only a crime to fail to register it upon bringing it in. There's a big difference. The disadvantage to having an unregistered gun is if you get caught concealed carrying without a CCW it's a felony instead of a misdemeanor if it's not registered to you. Otherwise it's not illegal to have an unregistered gun and if anybody starts rubbing their snout all over it asking questions you keep your pie hole shut. Also be careful about what you post online. CA DOJ lurks California gun communities online.

If it's your parents gun and they're giving it to you across state lines then it does need to go through a gun store. If you say "my dad gave it to me" then take possession of the inter-state gift without a gun store getting involved I do believe you are committing a federal crime. Not so if it was always yours or gifted to you long ago while you and your parents were residents of the same state that allows face to face private transfers.

The differences are super subtle. Know the rules and you can stay out of trouble.

    Whatever you do, DO NOT:
    1. Take legal gun advice from here
    2. Take legal gun advice from gun stores (most of them are CLUELESS even the good ones)
    3. Talk to cops about your guns
    4. Even think about telling the cops you have guns even if they ask

    DO:
Go to calguns and learn the real rules.

No, firearm laws in National Parks/Forests/Monuments/etc reflect the laws of the states in which they are. You can’t carry in the buildings because they are technically federal buildings but the rest of the park is generally unrestricted.

There's actually no legal requirement to register a imported gun in California.

Yes, DOJ tells you there is, and most everyone thinks there is... but there is no penal code section for possessing an unregistered gun.

There's sections for possessing a gun registered to someone else, there's sections for possessing a gun if you don't have a legal right to (felon, probationer, etc), but there is no crime in possessing an otherwise legal gun that is not registered.

So my answer would be to not register it at all.

Others will shit their pants at this idea, but do your own research and see for yourself.

Edited to add: I wouldn't carry that gun concealed or use it in a self defense scenario. Leave that to a legitimately registered gun. I'm only responding to the question of bringing an unregistered gun into Calif.
