But yeah, dead on. Basically your last few sentences are what goes through my head every time someone on here starts complaining about the way these trucks drive

 

For clarity, do you own a 3rd gen?

 

I agree with the OP. I don't have a 3rd Gen yet but will probably buy one in the next few years. I would like the transmission to shift more - as in put in an 8 or 10 speed tranny like other manufactures are doing. This way it can exploit the engine HP and torque curve at low and high speeds to improve mileage and performance. Ford and GM collaborated in building a 10-speed AT. They can software tune it for sports cars (Camaros/Mustangs) and Trucks (F-Series/Silverados). I would be happy with an 8 speed in the Tacoma. We need to get used to this being the future. In the near future they might even have a boring CVT strong enough to be in a high torque truck. That would have great performance and mileage but be as boring as hell.

Also, the same exact arguments apply to 2nd gens. Its a Tacoma. It is not a 1 ton Cummins, not a Prius, not a sports car. And I think thats where a lot of folks go wrong. Too many and/or unrealistic expectations. Which I suppose could partially be our fault as current owners since we love these trucks so much haha

 

I daily mine, have since October of 2015. Love it... well, love it more now that I've corrected a few things. You're right, it's not like a cummins (torque reference), prius (mileage and/or gutless reference) or a sports car. It's a vehicle that has it's quirks like any other. Some of those quirks annoy people. Not everyone, not even a majority of owners I'd wager.. but enough to get Toyota's attention. Why else would they release multiple driveability TSBs, mostly centered around the auto transmission? And guess what - when you read the symptoms in those documents, they line up pretty darn well with the complaints you see on TW.

I will say it again, plenty of people love their trucks just the way they are and I believe them 100% I did not like the way my truck drove from the factory and have fixed that. It's not about extremes like wanting stump pulling torque or 5 second 0-60 or 30+ MPG.. It's about basic driveability stuff that annoys SOME people - a lot.

I get that owners are proud of their purchase and don't want to hear negative shit day in and day out. They aren't experiencing the annoying stuff that others are. But - coming on here and creating a thread to try and convince people their truck is just fine, that all the negativity is just whining, that there's no need to make it better, and that available products (OVtune) don't do anything, well it's beginning to look a lot like gaslighting.

Not everyone has had the same experience with the 3rd gen.

 

You know what though? every person ive met who has one, I ask how do you like your Tacoma? They say, "I love it lots of power super fun looks great," etc... Then I ask, "What do you think of how the transmission shifts?"
And they say, "It's okay most of the time but whenever I hit a hill, or go on a trip it shifts alot".



It's 5 people I've asked now, 3 were women who know nothing about forums or repairs in general. The other two were old guys who know nothing of forums.

When I met my lease manager whoa couple months ago, also owns a Tacoma, I asked him point blank how often someone who buys a Tacoma comes back and complains about the transmission. He said it was almost 30% of the time.

 

I’m not an engineer. I don’t race and fix motor bikes. I am however mechanically inclined. Love my truck and am happy, for the most part, with my purchase. With that said....

Right out the gate, had to have new drums. It bounced coming to stop. Had TSB 62-18 done a few weeks later to stop the surging, stuttering, and over all sluggishness trying to keep a steady speed. That fixed it. Now after 3000 miles, it’s back. It’s annoying. And flat out isn’t right no matter how you try to spin it. I have owned many, many vehicles from all walks of life, new and used, that have never exhibited anything like this before. Also, harness for radio came loose and they had to fix it last Saturday.

You can defend this condition with science, graphs, charts, videos, and explain this to your hearts content all you want, it doesn’t make it right. Now I’m in the 1% here I guess (still love my truck) that feels differently that the 99% percent quoted above. But honestly, quoted above, that 25k is being sold monthly so that makes us here just a very small fraction of what’s out there. We have no clue as to what the actual 99% feels. And ones that defend or say that’s the way the truck is, you don’t speak for me. You speak from your experiences, not mine.

 

I like mine, am aware of the math, hp and tq are sufficient, BUT the throttle responce is crap. I bought one cause I know the quality. I have been in situations with them (not mine) that make you say,"holy shit that thing can take some abuse"! Then you polish it up and it keeps going flawlessly. So, I needed a truck and would not have considered anything else.

So, I don't care, when starting on a hill, forward, reverse, loaded or unloaded. Having to do the e-brake maneuver is silly.

I have no complaints about anything to do with my truck after spending a week in a rental car while my truck was getting fixed.

 

You'll need to get used to not having a steering wheel in the future. Tell that to the MT fanatics

 

Toyota actually does know what the majority of their owners think. It's called their sales graph, both new and used. Take a look at them and see what they say to you lol.

 

Yeah, I got tired of the V6's, went 4.7 V8. The 4.7's have their own set of problems, but I DID do something other than complain. The 3.5 seems pretty adequate though, all around. I test drove a 2016, needs that Pedal Commander or the OV tune. I'm ok with the 4.7 for now, that engine sounds nice when I put my foot into it.

Really? Do they show a dissatisfaction chart? Nope. Once you buy a truck, it’s not like you can go and exchange it. A lot of people buy used. Most may have traded something more expensive for something cheaper and didn’t know any better. Point is, it means bunk because you/we don’t really know. we only know what they tell us. Lol.

I love my truck. I never said I had regrets or anything of the sort. But there are problems. Some care about them more than others. Some are mum and some are vocal about the subject. Some care, some don’t. some have problems, some don’t. But I’m getting tired of the ones that don’t, or do and dont really care, dismissing the problems for us that do.
