I researched and researched and decided the Glock 30 SF was the gun for me. I wanted lightweight, reliable, accurate, and primarily a camping/wilderness sidearm. With 10rd mag limit in CA, needed the shots to count so a .45 was a must.
Went to buy, rented one first, shots were ALL OVER the place at 15yds... I'm talking 12" groups, inconsistent. I was also shooting a Kimber TLE II and was dead on so I was concerned, but soon learned that this particular rental had seen over 1 million rounds through it with infrequent cleaning. So I went to look at the new ones. After feeling and going back to shoot a few others, $600 later and I'm now an owner of a Springfield XD45 ACP. I could have dealt with the SF grip but the XD felt so much better. It's not a carry weapon so I didn't mind the extra weight. It felt better, sighted quicker, and seemed like the better deal for the money, and I went in wanting to spend under $700. 9 more days of cool-off till she's in my hands. Still love the Glocks, they are proven guns but I guess that grip is just a personal thing. Grip is too important a characteristic to settle for.

Moved for just ^ that reason.

And you are right- You can't settle on grip-If you end up needing it for real-You want everything to be as perfect and comfortable as possible.
    Can't wait for some photos!!

I'm getting ready to buy a shotgun (I'm thinking a Remington 870P Max- but I'm not sure) and a pistol (Likely a SIGP220).
The wife and I are probably moving off base- so it's time to set up the proper home defense.

Nice! I love my XD45 (dark earth). You're right, not a carry gun at all.
