True, but then again my Taco went back with only 500 miles on it. The serpantine belt was installed incorrectly or defective. it shredded, wrapped cords around the crank snout, and cut up the front main seal. It was leaking oil like a sieve.

Regarding the CEL (also called MIL) I drove my '96 Pontiac Bonneville with that check engine light on for 8 years![/i] It came on in 2002 and nobody could make it stay off. I'd turn it off when I needed a smog test, & it'd be back on 3 days later.

The car always started and ran perfect. I gave it to my daughter this year & she drives it every day.

I stand corrected then.. But the question remains what kind of damn vehicle breaks down in 90 days ? I guess that is less then the 2630km tranny going in the 350 super duty then. It actually made it over 90 days on that truck. You'd think that would be on warranty but I actually don't think they paid for it. Was not abuse just a really bad location to have it die. Not much you can do when you are in the middle of nowhere other then get one flown in and change it out yourself.

Hey Deano, I don't imagine you want to tinker with it since it's new and warrantied, but I've got a scangauge if you wanna check the code.

Keep us posted and stay positive.:)

Guilty of not reading the whole post, but lemme know if the battery disconnect doesn't do the trick and you still need a reset.

And get that older van locking gas cap off there. If Toyota doesn't make one, don't use anything else. You live in Maquoketa anyway, right? Unless you head to Chicago once a week or something, what do you have to worry about?

FYI, toyota used to make a locking gas cap (I have one from the dealership on my '05 and have for years...cost was around $14). But they didn't list them at the time. It takes a knowledgeable parts guy at the dealership to know there's only a few designs toyota uses and to know which one is on the taco. Then they grab the matching one for another toyota model and voila! I think someone once mentioned that somewhere around the 09 model that the design changed again? The '05 uses the triangle on the cap.

One reason for not putting a locking gas cap/door on the taco (aside from saving money) is likely because you can't siphon gas out of them due to the screen in the filler tube. But that doesn't stop people from dumping things down the filler. So a locking cap is a good idea. And always use a newer one since it's less likely to have its pressure release fail on you and trigger a check engine light.

Thanks for the heads up on the hinges as i do live in the midwest. As far as not needing a locking door then why do they remain to put them on all toyota cars and our 2010 Rav. Do they not mess with truck gas. I worry more about some kid putting something down the tank than stealing gas. Especially if he can't siphon and gets mad. I use my truck to go fishing and remote hunting here in Dubuque and is late at night fishing and alone in the boat ramp. Prime place for something to happen and by the way i am heading to Chicago this weekend. Can happen anywhere. I will try the stant cap some of you mention. I checked three large toyota dealerships and they have no locking cap listed and even went to Canada toyota like one guy said he saw in 2010 brochure and got his at his dealership. No listing i can see from toyota. They just put locking doors on their cars and say no reason to put them on trucks. DUH?

Stant 10504 fits the 2009-2010 model years. Toyota uses the Stant caps, so you'll be getting the same cap regardless.

And I can see the mistakes made at those dealerships. They looked up the information in a book. The books DON'T list the locking gas caps for our trucks. That's why I mentioned that you just need to find a knowledgeable parts guy at a dealership that knows the vehicles. If they know which other models have same filler tube threads (the guys at my dealership knew it from memory), then it's a piece of cake for them. That's how I got mine from the dealership 4 years ago because they weren't listed in the books then either.

Maybe I should have posted the actual numbers:

For 2005-2008: Stant 10509 or 11509 (the 10509 has the correct triangle threads as stock but supposedly the 11509 with regular threads works too)

For 2009-2010: Stant 10504 or 11504 (the 11504 has the triangle threaded cap, but since things changed in '09, I'm not sure which threads the non-locking stock cap has. Supposedly both part numbers work though)

2010 I4 Access-cab - 13,850 miles - CEL came on last thursday, took it back to dealer Monday (yesterday) - said that techs could not find reason for CEL. I was in for scheduled maintenance, but that was not cause. Traction control light was on as well (below the CEL) - Toyota cleared the light and wouldn't you know...I start my truck up again today and the CEL is on again, along with Traction control. Calling Toyota now.....discerning though that they just looked at it yesterday... for same problem, and said it was nothing, but now "nothing" is back.

will let ya'll know what the dillio

Please correct me if anyone knows different, my impression about the CEL is that it is designed to detect problems with the emission systems, and things that might affect emissions, it is not designed to detect impending engine/transmission/suspension/etc problems, although there may be some overlap on those things and a CEL may alert you to actual non-emission related engine problems. So most of the time if you get a CEL, and the thing will run ok, it is most likely safe to drive, you may pollute more than usual, but it should be safe to drive for a short while at least, until it can be diagnosed.

Speaking of which, how hard or expensive would it be to have the codes be displayed and not just a CEL? Readout tools are not too expensive, but for all the sensors and emission-relate devices that the vehicle computer checks and keeps track of it should give better diagnostics if it needs to, rather than just a CEL.

Yes usually emissions. You need a reader, and there is several available. Will it hurt driving with it on? I guess it depends what the error is. I don't think it would hurt anything. Could just be a bad sensor. Maybe nothing wrong but that bad sensor will make the computer adjust things hat maybe not need adjusting so it could create problems. Your gas mileage might drop. I'd take it in and tell them to fix it. As a normal owner you cannot fix it yourself and it's under warrenty so make them fix it. They already have all the cool tools.

Check engine light was ALL MY FAULT, not the truck. I put a used locking cap on i had in the garage. WRONG Bought the right one you guys suggested on here and problem solved. Not one problem with the truck now in 8500 miles and is the best truck i have owned in 40 years. Love it. Only thing i wish the hood didn't have the scoop raised on it as i hunt and have trouble seeing over the hood when i go over a hill. I am only 5'8'' and need a booster seat i guess. A non functional hood scoop isn't neccessary for this 63 year old kid. Wish there was a light on the 4 wheel drive selector. Fumble for it in the dark sometimes. Maybe there is and mine isn't lit up. Will ask. Great truck and trouble free so far.

When I was looking for a cap for my 2009 I found on Stants web site the 10504 is packaged in a box and the 11504 is packaged on a card for hanging. Both are the same cap.

Nah, he's correct, more or less. 90-day quality doesn't mean shit in my book. I want to know how your vehicle is going to do after 10 years and a lot of pounding.

And in that regard, according to the sources that track that kind of thing (Consumer Reports, True Delta, etc.), Toyota is still near the top of the pack.

I agree that their perfectionism has slipped over the past 5 years (the dash rattle in my Tacoma being a perfect example), but the vital parts still hold up forever, which is what got them the rep in the first place.

Hood scoop or not (as I don't have one), it is hard to see over the hood on the hills (I'm 5'6").

Get yourself the illuminated 4x4 switch to install (made by a TW member). Love mine (I got it in the orange to match everything). Here's his thread and a direct link to it on ebay:

    Glad that got solved!

As for the hood scoop... yes, it is an obstruction and serves no purpose other than to entertain the kids who think the truck has a super charger in it, I guess? Why didn't you get an Off Road instead of a Sport? No scoop and has A-TRAC...
