The new OEM ecu time will improve drivability way more than anything on the market except the OV tune’s 91 octane update, but I havent used that so I wouldn’t know.

I recently installed the pedal commander and its day and night difference, feels like my 2nd gen tacoma all over again. Well worth the money imo, they have a 30 day money back if you aren't satisfied with it.

So it feels like it lost 32 horsepower?

Or did it cause the rear wheel arches to mutate into trapezoids?

    So confused.....

I'm not sure if you driven the 2nd gen tacoma or not but there is no lag when you press down on the pedal. Even though it had less horsepower on paper, however it was day and night in acceleration compared to the 3rd gen.

You're exactly the type of guy I was talking about, you're crying about the cruise control shifting too much LOL. Dude a normal truck owner would just slap in S4 to hold the gear for the incline, or adjust the speed slightly up or down because you're obviously riding along right a shift point, or how about just driving it yourself.

Its called an overdrive gear and the Tacoma has TWO of them, if you understood what was happening mechanically you wouldn't be bitching about it to strangers on the internet you'd just solve it. And every truck with multiple overdrive gears has people like you that don't understand whats going on. Its not a "toyota issue" its mostly an old people thing "but but but back in my day this didn't happen!":

    Chevy Colorado:
    https://www.coloradofans.com/forums...n-forum/385594-not-liking-cruise-control.html

    F-150
    https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/965307-transmission-hunting-for-correct-gear.html

    Silverado:
    http://gmauthority.com/blog/topic/2016-sierra-8-spd-issue/

Modern vehicles with 2-3 times the gears as they had in the "old days" will gear hunt, sometimes shudder, and sometimes hesitate. It doesn't bother the overwhelming majority of truck owners because they bought a fucking truck, not a Lexus. They just deal with it and accept its a fact of modern EPA standards mandating we squeeze every MPG possible.

But on the internet bitchy types congregate into an echo chamber that amplifies their "issues" and reinforces their neurotic tendencies by validating their victimhood... "OMG my truck is shifting too much! OMG it made a noise and it bothers me! OMG I heard a 'CLICK' when I reversed am I going to die?! The dealer just keeps giving me the runaround!" You see this EVERYDAY on this site, but in the real world people like that are actually super rare.

My old dealership had never even heard of the "diff howl" because they had never had an actual complaint about it, and they were the #1 Toyota truck seller in the entire region. But on this website you'd swear every tacoma has it

I just had the OEM update done on my MT O/R and what an improvement! It drives so much smoother now. Everything from low speed creeping at idle to partial throttle acceleration at 50mph, the truck drives damn near perfectly. Essentially any of the complaints I had with surging and abrupt throttle sensitivity are resolved.

You sound salty... almost like you can't afford a new $40k truck so you're trying to make yourself feel better about having to live your 12 year old one :D

    Yeah.

I find it hard to believe that there are defenders of the stock tune even in this thread.

    Too few to list.
I've noticed that it does lag when I had my 4cyl 3rd Gen. Feels like a two step lag to me. 1st is more of a split second delay followed by a slow power delivery. I always backed into my drive way and I noticed that there's a definitive delay and split second lag that none of our other cars have old or new. It's ecm programming and nothing mechanical. I drove a 3.5L manual and I felt the same delayed power delivery.

I would imagine whatever they did with the TSB update will be “stock” in future builds from the factory. I’m very happy with the OEM tune once they did the TSB update.

I drive a MT though, so none of the transmission shifting isssues people cry about. It shifts when I want it to. Just like god intended.

there is a update to the auto transmissions that makes it better .. most dealerships wont install it till the it is brought in by the customer for service … the issue is not the horse power is the throttle by wire u just have to learn how much u need to press the pedal . with the update it does help a lot . but I drive slower anyways no hurry to get to the red light ,,lol

I have. My son has one. Helped purchase it....he’s in college.....and drove it up north for him. Wife has a T4R. Can’t see what all the fuss is about.

No complaints about the way mine shifts or drives. Scoots around just fine. Slap into S4 around town and just put it in drive on the highway. Feels peppier than both the Gen2 and the T4R.

FWIW all three feel underpowered and gutless next to my Cummins work truck.

Yea, an incline... in fucking Ohio. Your a fucking idiot. You have no clue. The reflash fixed the issue. My buddy was in the passenger seat and couldn’t believe what was going on. But that must be how it was designed right? Funny though how Toyota already had a magic fix for it though? Old people thing? I’m 34 years old, that’s not the issue. Your fan boyism is concerning. Your sitting here on the internet trying to defend a truck you don’t own, and have never driven. You must believe every single truck is built the exact same way and fully occluding to Toyota specifications. That shit doesn’t happen, and that these trucks are some type of modern marvel. New flash dude: that’s incorrect. I myself ain’t gonna lose any sleep over anything. Other than the cruise issue I’m had only a few small issues with the truck. The blend door either got stuck or froze and wouldn’t change it’s position. Happened once for about a day and then has been fine since. My rear diff has the seepage issue. I mean while I think it’s poor quality that it’s stained as hell and started showing signs at 6k it’s never had any drip. So I never made a huge stink about it. Just sucks you have the carrier and everything to remove that takes longer than just sealing up a rear cover. The entune used to reset a bunch while driving, but ever since it did an update it’s been fine. I’ve had a few dash rattles. Took apart some of the panels and put some foam on them and that stopped. Although one just returned. Normally I have the stereo cranking so I never hear them, but it is annoying. I’ve heard the kazoo sound that people make a big fuss about. It’s very faint and I could care less. To me that’s just finding something to gripe about. But we all do have different hearings so maybe to someone else it sounds as bad as my dash rattle. So who am I to judge? It’s an easy fix Atleast. The only things is dislike about the truck is the power band, hesitation, and how bouncy the vehicle is when it’s a bump. I didn’t buy my Tacoma to take to the trails everyday and beat the shit out of. I bought it to drive to work everyday. Does it get me there? Of course and I have no concerns of the reliability. I just hate that in order to pass some old lady slowly starting off at a light, or some slow driving minivan, that in order to do so, It has to jump to 5 grand into the powerband to do so. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if I came out of a Scion tC or Honda Civic or something. I came out of a 3.5 ecoboost. Truck was smooth and had lots of torque and low end power. So perhaps I was spoiled. Anyways I bought the Tacoma for a reason. To save a little cash for a bit knowing when I decide to dump it, I’m not going to take as big of a hit as I would with anything else. I loved my first gen, and that’s why I bought another Tacoma. You can take my ownership how you want. I don’t have to justify anything to you. You’re not making my truck payment. I am. There are things I like about the truck and things I don’t. I could really say that about every vehicle. I just wish it was something like I hate that it only has 1 usb vs being annoyed by the driving experience. I knew when I took it for a test drive it was nothing close to compare to my F150. I knew I was downgrading in several aspects. We all have bought things in our lives, thatbwhen we first see are like I have to have. And after buying you may regret, realize there is something better for you, you didn’t need, or don’t use. Tacoma isn’t a bad truck. Just think it’s no longer for me.

^^^ It's this combined with the autotrans shift programming. I don't own a 3G, but I took one on a long test drive and it was so obvious.

Fact - 5th Gen 4Runner owners have THE EXACT SAME COMPLAINT! Narrative goes like this, "My 5th Gen 4.0 feels slower than my 4th Gen 4.0!!! It has the same engine and transmission, WHY, WHY, WHY!!!!" It's all about the throttle-by-wire. Some of them have figured that out and bought the Pedal Commander or Shift Sensor, whatever they're called.

I've looked at the torque curve for the 3.5, it's not bad, not as linear as other Toyota engines, but something like 80% of peak torque at 2k RPM. The torque curve does have severe dips in certain RPM ranges (I think that is something to do with Atkinson/Otto cycling). It's all about how Toyota tuned things to maximize EPA ratings.

I've said from the start get a Pedal Commander, then OV Tune developed a tune that addresses both throttle response and cleans up the torque curve.

One more thing, it wouldn't surprise me if Toyota kept the same old 2016 throttle and transmission tune from the factory. Otherwise, updating to the TSB's that have been developed might drop the EPA fuel mileage rating. So a 2018/2019 Taco fresh off the lot would drive the same as a 2016. Then, if a customer complains they'll apply the various TSB's.
