feedback- 5100s vs Eibachs Protruck

    Has anyone used both yet?
    Im not overly happy with the ride of my bilsteins. On my 2nd gen they were fine, but on my 2016, the truck does not feel composed. Feels unstable on bumps. I realize part of that is because of the digressive valving, but it just isnt comfortable like on my 2nd gen.

    So Im looking at the eibach protruck shocks now. Those are progressive, so might be better for 90% of my driving onroad.
    So I need some input.

    You’re comparing shocks to what sounds like eibachs lift springs. So apples to oranges.

    Also what notch are you on with the 5100’s? Oem springs?

    They look like a very similar product. I would doubt if there is any noticeable difference in how they ride.

    they are pretty similar, except the bilsteins are digressive, and the eibachs are progressive. im curious how a progressive shock rides in comparison.

    I thought they were both digressive. I'd imagine they would be somewhat softer.

    Thats what Im thinking. Im hoping someone has em on their 3rd gen, and could chime in with their experience.

    I just had the eibach pro truck lift installed on my 2017 Tacoma TRD OR yesterday. My only comparison is with the stock suspension, which I put 20k miles on. So far I've only driven 70 miles with the new suspension, but it does feel better than the old suspension. It is very smooth and soaks up the bumps in the road. I hope to test it off roading soon. I had mine set to the second highest setting and lifted my truck about 2 inches. I also went up one tire size. I now have 265-75-R16 Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires on my stock wheels. So far I'm very happy with the results.

    Too much.
    What if you put the 5100s at the bottom notch, then switched the springs out with 884s or 885s? Preloading springs makes for a stiffer ride....

    Progressive is softer. Digressive is harder for going faster over bumps. Progressive is better for daily driving

    It doesn’t matter what position or setting at which the ring is positioned. Once the weight of the vehicle is placed on the spring, the coil spring will be the same length at any of the 4 settings, and the ride will be the same.

    What gives the vehicle lift with the 5100s is the fact that the distance from the bottom of the shock to the ring is increased in length, thus providing lift by creating more space between the ring, or bottom of the coil and the lower control arm.

    Just sayin.

    I don’t know a lot about suspension, but when some say moving the perch up preloads the springs and makes them stiffer, I don’t really understand how. I’m with you. Wouldn’t moving the perch up just reduce down travel and potentially top out the shock sooner? The coil should still function the same.

    Someone please explain if this is wrong.

    Someone finally agrees with Bilstein. I too thought the same thing. I was schooled by my shop that changing springs is not needed. Mine are 5100s set on the 4th setting, rides amazingly better than the factory Sport suspension. I'm happy with my 5100s.

    So if this is the case, is the perceived stiffer ride people are reporting possibly due to the poor suspension geometry from lifting on the top perch setting along with the digressive valves strut?

    For argument sake I would still agree that a longer coil should still be better because it would allow a greater range of travel on the new shock.

    Now that I think of it. On my FJ, the previous owner had installed a preload spacer above the coils and left the 5100s on the bottom clip. This didn’t make any sense to me at the time and no one I talked to had any explanation why. Now I’m thinking this essentially was similar to adding a longer coil and allowed for greater travel rather than moving the perch up.

    IMG_20181009_181855269_HDR.jpg IMG_20181009_175650950_HDR.jpg I rode in one with 885 and Bilstein set on the lowest setting and a leaf in the rear. It rode great. I was on the fence about what to do and the off road shop assured me that the stock coils and a one inch block would be fine. Guess what he was right. Mine rides awesome, floats like a Cady and soaks up bumps, allignment was dead perfect, no issues at all. PM me and I will give you the info and you can call them. I very content with my decision. Also we achieved about the same amount of lift and we both used the same wheels and tires are size.
