    I need a USB Type-B port, prefer next to USB/Aux port. It doesn't have to have a cover like the USB/Aux port but would be nice if did. I can't find anything online.

    Why on earth do you need a type B port?

    That's my question.... type B is a PERIPHERAL port and typically only used on large stationary peripherals, like printers.
    Which isn't to suggest that there isn't a valid reason for installing a peripheral port, but wouldn't it make more sense to install a Micro-B or, way way better, type-C?

    Haltech Elite 1500 uses Type-B, I wanted an easy way to connect to my ECU. I guess I could run a conversion cable to back of regular USB outlet.

    Ok, so while the "haltech" website is seemingly broken, I was able to find a few details on reseller websites. Looks like that device *itself* has a USB-B socket, and comes with an A-to-B wire, and you are under the impression that you would need a B-male-to-B-female wire run from that box to a socket on your dashboard, correct?

    You don't need or want that.

    What you want, is this;

    and this;

    The point was more for the type of parts, not on the exact parts. There are hundreds of similar options. For example;
    https://www.amazon.com/Cables-Printer-Extender-Connection-F-USB_B/dp/B074J746N3
    Same thing, but with a wire between the two connectors instead of being hard mounted.

    Right, yeah this is more of what I had in mind. Don't really need the adapter separate since I'll need a cable anyways.

    Huh? The whole point is that you'll have a USB-C socket on your panel. The other part, whether it has a wire or is fixed, is just an adapter to go from the USB-A on the back of the USB-C socket, to the USB-B.

    Didn't you notice that I gave you TWO parts?
    https://www.amazon.com/USB-C-Female-Cable-Panel-Mount/dp/B076MPGMW6 <-- This *IS* the "outlet... which looks stock"

    And the other one is just an adapter, whether it has a wire between the two plugs or not. That's all it is, an adapter.

    The first part, which is a USB-C socket, goes on your PANEL. It plugs INTO the SECOND part, which is an adapter that connects to your USB-B thing.

    I didn't notice that- I don't need a USB-C port. My laptop takes USB 2/3, the ECU is USB Type-B.

    USB 2-3 has almost nothing to do with the plug.
    A and B plugs are obsolete. ALL new devices (laptops, phones, etc.) use USB-C now, so there's really no point in installing an obsolete and FRAGILE socket when you have the option of installing a correct modern durable USB-C.

    Use a wire like this to connect your legacy equipment to USB-C;
    https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Type-C-USB-Male-Cable/dp/B01GGKYN0A

    If your equipment has modern USB-C plug and not JUST legacy USB-A, then you use this cable;
    https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-Type-C-2-0-Cable/dp/B01GGKZ2SC

    I'm not worried about cables, I need a port that'll accept any of these options

    Right, and I'm telling you that the CORRECT PORT (panel mount socket) is a USB-C.

    This port's only function is to communicate with the ECU, which is USB 2 Type-B. I don't know why you're hung up on USB-C. Your statement is assuming that USB 3 won't be on my laptop. The CORRECT port is the one that I need.

    Let me try to explain this to you in very simple terms;

    USB uses 4 wires;
    +5V
    GND
    D+
    D-

    It doesn't matter what shape the plug is, they still carry those 4 wires.

    If you want to put a great big ugly obsolete plug on your dashboard that will guarantee that you can never find the wire that matches it, go right ahead. But if you want a nice neat small and durable plug that will be common for MANY YEARS TO COME, then you want to put a USB-C there.

    A, B, C describe the PHYSICAL PLUG ONLY, and not the signals carried on the pins.
