I was told that removing the charcoal filter will give me less restriction, but i have a 96 1st gen 4 cyl 2.7 l. Someone else told me 1st gens. don't have charcoal filters. So does my tacoma have a charcoal filter or not, and should i remove it? Also, i heard something about removing the restrictive L from the airbox. Does this help?

You dont have the filter. Do the Deck plate mod.

I don't think the 1st gens do, but I might be wrong. The best way to figure it out is to open the filter box and look. Can't miss it.
