Ok so here are my results for this oil:

3943 miles (ultragauge says vs 3946 odo, I would say UG is more accurate since my speed is calcualted on it and not my speedometer which the odo is based on)

For this oil change I used Mobil One Advanced Full Synthetic. I also collected a sample that I will be sending to Blackstone for an oil analysis. I will post the results here when I get them. They are remodling the wolly world I buy my oil from so I was lucky to find any synthic 5w-30 this time. Pretty annoyed about it but overall it's no big deal. Also since I use fuelly I was thinking about calculating my mpg average on this oil change, the more data the better right?

 

Your ultra gauge miles should be calibrated to a gps giving you a accurate mileage . If it's not it's probably off , it's getting the same info as your odometer . If your tires are off your mileage will be off . Even if you have stock tires

 

I calibrated the ultragauge with gps on my phone so indeed it is more accurate than my speedo. My speedo is high compared to my actual speed on stock tire size. That will change soon enough then I will calibrate the tire size again.

 

I'm currently at about 132 hours and 1884 miles (according to the odometer). My ultragauge says I've been 1889 miles...
This OCI was started on 4/17/2017 (130 days ago), so I'm averaging just a little over an hour of runtime per day and going ~14.5 miles per day. I usually have a lower MPH average, but I've been running around more here lately with various projects I have going. I might run this OCI until around mid October and see how many hours I rack up until toyota recommends an oil change per their 5k/6 month recommendation. I might pull a sample and send it in when I change it, I'm curious to see what the sample @Murphinator sent in looks like on paper. I've got more runtime than him despite having way less miles on this run. I'm running Mobil 1 Extended Protection and an OEM Toyota filter, in case anyone was wondering.

I've been doing some thinking, Mobil 1 EP is supposed to be good for 15,000 miles or 1 year. If the average person drives an average of 30 MPH, in theory this oil should be good for a 500 hour run?

It has a little higher viscosity than a standard 5w-30 and a fresh TBN of I think 11.

 

Very interesting. If I see some in the stores around here I might pick some up. I was pretty hard on my truck that last oil change so overall I'm not too disappointed in it. I was only going to test once a year but since blackstone sent me two more sample kits I think I will test it again next change.

 

Hopefully the sodium was just a fluke or something, have you been using Mobil 1 consistently? I'm using the EP version and have been for the last couple of years. Prior to using the EP I was using the standard Mobil 1 full synthetic... but the EP started being the same price and at one Walmart in my area it's actually cheaper sometimes, so why not? I broke my truck in on Dino (Penzoil Yellow Bottle) 5w-30 at 5,000 intervals up to about 30 or 35k, that was when she was new and never left the pavement... now she lives on a gravel road and goes off-road almost daily. I'm tempted to just use a cheap conventional and change it every 100 hours. I'm thinking 5w-30 for the summer and 5w-20 in the winter, especially since I don't usually tow anything in the winter anyways. There was a TSB for these engines saying that 5w-20 was fine to use in place of 5w-30.

 

Everything I've found seems to back up toyota's claim that 5w-20 is fine in these engines (unless you're pushing them hard, in which case I'd stay with a higher viscosity oil).

 

Unforentately I do not know what oil has been put into this truck before the sample I pulled off the mobile 1. Purchased at 47.5k miles (dealer changed oil before I bought it). Then when the super was put on at 50k the dealer changed it as well. Then after 3k i changed that oil for the mobile 1. Right now I am running a mix of mobile 1 EP and high mileage. (Wal mart was remodling and was pretty much out of all their oil, it was the only stuff I could get).

I just got a work truck recently so now my truck will be putting a lot less miles on. I am going to do my next change at 3,000 and I will send in another sample. Hopefully the sodium drops. Next oil change i kight drop the oil pan and clean it out. Maybe let the truck drain over night. Probably way over kill, but I'd liek to have clean oil. If they still made 2nd gens when I bought my truck I would have bought new. It is what it is. Time will tell.

 

I hit six months on this OCI yesterday. 2,533 miles according to the odometer.
184 hours, avg speed of 13.8 mph.

 

I went ahead and changed my oil since I was at the 6 month mark. I went with penzoil platinum this time instead of my usual mobil 1 extended protection. Only reason being that I had it sitting on the shelf... bought it for my sisters car and also had mobil 1 already bought... she wanted the mobil 1. I'm fine with that, the platinum gets good UOAs from what I've seen.

I found this today, Dodge challenger maintenance recommendations for the 3.6 and 5.7 liter engines. The 3.6 holds 6 quarts of 5w20 and the 5.7 holds 7 quarts of 5w20. Dodge recommends 10,000 miles, 350 hours or 12 months, whichever occurs first.
10,000 miles divided by 350 hours would give you an average speed of 28.57 mph.

(1/2 of that recommendation, which is what Toyota recommends for the 4.0 Tacoma would be 5,000 miles, 175 hours, or 6 months...just a thought.)

Then they go on to say that if your vehicle is operated in severe conditions (off road or dusty conditions) you should change the oil every 4,000 miles.
That would give you an estimate of about 140 hours per OCI under severe service, assuming an average speed of 28.57 as suggested earlier. I guess the question is whether or not the 350 hour recommendation applies here?

Let's pretend for a minute that I own one of these vehicles and use it in the same manner as I use my truck. On my last OCI I averaged 13.8 MPH, so according to Dodge I would have needed to change my oil at 4000 miles. 4,000/13.8=289.86 hours. This would put me well under the 350 hour recommendation (the question remains, does the hour recommendation change under severe service?).

On the flip side, if I went 5,000 miles(ignoring the 6 month interval) as Toyota states you should (for my Tacoma), I would have been at 362 hours of runtime, Assuming I had gone by miles instead of time. On my last OCI I changed my oil at the 6 month mark(Toyota requires 5k/6mo for the Tacoma), which was a little over 185 hours, but only 2,550 miles.

If I was following a 10K/12 month interval like a lot of new vehicles do, I would be nearing 400 hours of run time by the end of the year/OCI, based on my current driving habits.
