I remember that trip! Good times. Dome Road up and Paliza Canyon down.

Now that I've gotten used to the flat top, I like it much better. It cleans up the front end.

I didn't know you'd done the LCA bushings on the Taco. Good to know. When I had to do the bushings on my 4Runner I installed a new set of factory arms as well.

Good on you for volunteering, Tom. I'm definitely up for a ride. It's been too long since I last got out and we have a new member of the "pack" who needs to go on his first ride.

^^^^^Oh damn he's cute!!!! Congrats, Nick.

On another note, yesterday I noticed that both of my new front axles have split their inner CV joint boots already. They're only 2 weeks old, with less than 3k miles on them. I guess that the angle due to my lift is too much for them (they were also vibrating a bit on the trip, at highway speeds), so I'll have to lower the truck. The only reason it's high is due to the Wheelers 5-leaf rear springs, which I put on to deal with the bottoming out I was seeing with any weight in the bed. I think the 5100s lifted the truck as well. I may need to have some custom springs made that give load capacity w/o raising the truck much, and find some shorter shocks too. I am a bit perplexed and unpleased at the moment; oh well. I'll figure something out. :dancingbacon:

I put Sumo Poly springs in place of my bump stops. Even helps when pulling a travel trailer.

What's his name? Balancing out the testosterone/estrogen levels in the house?

Yeah, I'm up for getting out. I'll shoot you a call later today or Tuesday night.

I think that a lot of the lift I got was from installing the Bilstein 5100's. They brought the front up 2 3/4" w/ the stock springs. I need to find shocks that don't lift my truck; what are you folks w/ 1st-gen trucks using for shock absorbers? I might go back to the stock Bilsteins to get the ride height closer to stock. I didn't want to lift my truck; I only wanted to increase the rear load capacity & get the axle off the bump stops.

He has no name yet, but we're working on it. We currently call him "pupster". And yeah, it was time for another male life form, the girls were taking over. Talk to you soon.

Did you install the 5100's on the lowest clip setting? They shouldn't provide that much lift if the clip is at the bottom setting. In my experience the 4600s (yellow bilstein HDs) will give you about 1/2" due to a little bit longer body, but that's it. The 5100s should do about the same on the lowest setting.

Yeah, I used the lowest clip setting. The boots failed after I put the Toytek springs on, but the outer boots on the original shafts had failed with the stock springs and the 5100 shocks. I'm going to try the lowest clip setting w/ the stock springs next. If that's still too high I'll have to return to the stock Yellow Billies. I also ordered the newer 5100 shocks (they're an inch or so shorter than the standard 5100s) for the rear. It's an adventure, I guess. :goingcrazy:

Ah, I didn't realized you had changed the springs too. I thought you installed the stock springs on the 5100's. The toytec springs are definitely giving you the lift. Once you get the stock springs back on the existing front shocks I bet you'll be happy with the result.

Thanks, Nick; I put the 5100s on when I installed the Wheelers 5-leaf springs in back for load capacity. I didn't want much lift, just wanted to get off the rear bump stops. I tried the 4-leaf package first, but it was not enough load capacity for my needs (hauling guns & ammo out in the desert, and music gear otherwise). I like the rear springs; I just need to get everything working together properly. I was OK with the way the stock front springs worked with the 5100s, but I must have had them on a setting higher than the lowest when I had the stock springs on. With the stock springs & the 5100s, the front came up 2 3/4" from stock; some of that had to be the clip setting.

It's just money, right? :D :frusty: :spending: :bananadead:

I will check this; thanks. The truck is too high for me at the moment, between the CV boot issues and ingress/egress issues (I'm getting old, I guess). I haul music gear on a weekly basis, and the lift into the bed is higher than I want. I originally only wanted more rear load capacity, and was willing to accept an inch or so of lift to achieve this.

Well, my retirement date has been established; Honeywell is closing the plant I work at next December (12/15/2019). I will not miss the place; it changed quite a bit from the interesting engineering environment that existed when I started there 20 years ago, to something very different and not in a good way.

I sure am glad that I took the opportunity this year to buy a house; I should be OK financially as long as I continue to live frugally. I'll have to tell Jonathon to nix the idea of the diamond inlays in my sliders, though. :notsure:

Congrats!! Are you planning on a second career? I only have 11 years until retirement. That why I feel all the pressure to get the mods done this year.

Thanks, folks. I'll be 61 when the plant closes, and between my pension, 401k and Social Security, I should make it OK in retirement. It will be tougher for those in their 40's & 50's.

Greg, Congrats on the milestone! I'm sure you could always find a fun part-time job at a gun shop or turtle store. Maybe more time to hit some trails?

Thanks all for the positive thoughts & words, it's appreciated. Tom, the gun store had not occurred to me! :D I hope to not have to work at all, but we'll see. Definitely more time for wheeling and all my other hobbies.
