What about aftermarket skid plates? Would they compromise safety in an accident?

I also worry about my seat covers. They are custom cut for taco, and have side airbag cutouts, but the manual says dont use them.

I’m glad everyone walked away safe. May I ask why you only owned this truck two week and the tires on the truck are very low on tread?
Sorry I’m a tire inspector had to call that out. I check everyone’s tires

Yes, the insurance will pay off. A future issue is being at fault, what will your rate be when you renew.

AFAIK, if it’s offered as option by the manufacturer it has to be homologated, which at a minimum requires justification, often citing relevant engineering studies of whatever the part and crash mode is, e.g. FEA models or component tests, that the part does not make for a “worst case” scenario which would require full crash testing. This is why you don’t see a Tacoma with a steel plate bumper and winch from the factory, because even if they had that passing the crash standards it would never meet pedestrian protection standards. I think there is definitely a reason manufacturers don’t offer a factory option for rock sliders bolted to the frame (those Chevy ones bolt to the body), and it probably has to do with side impact crash standards. The slider bolted to the frame would be transferring crash loads directly to the frame before the rocker panel, b-pillar, and floor board, etc. have a chance to act as crumple zones, which would have a pretty drastic effect on the impulse levels experienced by occupants I would hypothesize. I could be wrong, but again, you don’t see sliders bolted to the frame from OEM, even though we all know how great they are at protecting the body in low speed bumps against rocks when crawling. OEM aren’t known for missing out on potential revenue, and if they offered rock sliders tons of people would buy them for sure. They don’t though, so you have to wonder why, and again I think it’s crash safety.
