2003 Tacoma 12V source wire

Hi all,
Is there a 12V ignition wire in the engine bay. I just need to find one that gets power only when the car is on or the key is in 1st or 2nd position. This is for my trans cooler fan by the way. Thanks!

There are several. Easiest way is to splice in one of those add-a-circuit fuses (these) to the fuse box. Be sure not to overload the circuit.

You could also wire the fan directly the the battery, but use a relay (connected to an ignition circuit with the add-a-circuit thing) for the switch.

 

Just to reiterate what @jbrandt said....

Only use the add-a-circuit to trigger a Relay. DO NOT use it to power the fan directly.

 

I would think that as long as your combined amperage doesn't overload the circuit, it would be fine. But now that I think of it, a fan would probably overload just about all the circuits in the fusebox anyway...

Derale says the amp draw is 5.3
Does that sound right?

 

I'd run a line from the battery, to a fuse, through a relay, and to the fan. Then you can just use the tap to grab power for the switch, and run that to the relay as well.
