Why is the manual transmission better than automatic for offroading and/or towing?

It's not.

There are people who prefer manual, and people who prefer automatics. There are people who are die hard iPhone fans, and ones who'd never touch anything but an Android.

Everything has a place and a use. Don't buy into fanboy hype.

 

IS a MT better for off-roading? I'd think an AT would let you be a lot more precise and gentle in tight, tricky situations.

 

That is a massive can of worms. Each is objectively better in some situations (MT engine braking vs AT on steep, crawly climbs) but 90% is going to be preference.

AT gives crawl control. It does shift up and down a lot unless you drive fast enough to stay in higher gears. I’ve noticed the taco likes going 80 mph on the interstate. I think a lot of it is personal preference and I could’ve went either way if I had a choice at the time. The only tacos on the lot at the time I was shopping were AT.

 

Gearing is different/lower on manual. 8.75 rear diff. You have more control over torque and power since you get to pick the gears. Shifting is fun. These are the positives.
Negatives are the reverse gear is so tall you can go 129 mph in reverse at 2000 rpm. Good for backwards autocrosses, bad for backing up a trailer up a hill.
Road construction stop start traffic sucks. Hard to drive with one leg after you break foot mountain biking. These are the bad things.
However, have to give Toyota engineers props because a cast fits just fine on the clutch.

 

Because testosterone. Google it.

I used to be a manual guy untill I figured out I liked leaving my hand on my dates warm thighs while driving then some dumb stick. YMMV

My auto trd sport gets 23.1 mpg . I avg 82mph on the highway. Doesn’t search for gears at that speed and just feels aggressive.
