Hi sorry for my English, i gonna try to explain it.. i have a 2008 TRD 4x4 taco and my 4x4 didn't engage. i read a lot on the forum and i change my actuator but the problem still.

When i engage the 4x4 or if i try to engage the low on neutral it's the same thing, nothing!!!

i heard the sound (clic) in the glove place, the light of the 4x4 still flashing and when i'm on the road i heard the transfer case engage the rear one.. but nothing in the front.
We unplugged the actuator and check if we have electricity when i engaged it and no.. nothing..
We make this test: when 1 time he engage... we deconnect the actuator, take another one and plug it.. it still engage, and when i switch on 2x4 he desengaged and if i try to engage it again it didn't work anymore.. on park , on neutral, or Under 60 mph...

    Sometimes it's work (around 1 time of 100 )

I need help if somebody have this kind of problem ??

and my Toyota dealer said he never saw that!

    thank you :)

My 09 trd 4X4 doing something similar the lights flash and won't engage 4wd, I removed the transfer case actuator cover and there was a worn lead in the cap. It maybe the problem with yours too. It seems the dealer is out to collect 3000. I think there's a better way to fix it. I couldn't find much help here in tacoma world.

Isn't there another actuator at the front axle?

Yes and it works with the transfer case actuator.
When you set it to 4hi two things happen the front drive shaft engages and the front axle engages.

There are two actuators -- one on the front differential and one on the left rear of the transfer case. Both work together with the front actuator (on the diff) engaging and giving a feedback signal via the 4WD ECU (behind and above the glove box) as to its position so that 4hi can be completed (engaging the front driveshaft out of the Tcase). The transfer case actuator can then complete the shift once more from 4hi to 4lo if 4lo is selected.

If you think you have the skills to do some trouble shooting with a VOM meter post back and I will dig out and post the diagnostics.

Yeah, today at the worst moment possibly mine wouldn’t engage, and when I tried to put it in 4, the 4lo light came on, and then when I turned it back to 2wd the lights stayed on, and I have zero clue what it is

I had a feeling that I needed to get all 4 wheels off the ground.
