I am the original owner of this 2007 Tacoma, Off-Road, 6 speed manual. I've only put 41,000 miles on it!! Only mods are Bilsteins (+2.5" lift), add a leaf, wheels and 31" tires. It's a great truck. Why would I want to change? But....I'm a bit bored. My eyes are starting to wander. The Gen 3 doesn't seem much different but I do like the features I don't have -- leather, sunroof, Nav, bluetooth, adaptive cruise. And, I want more mods but not sure I want to invest in an older truck.

Any thoughts about making this change based on your experience?

I wouldn’t be worried about putting money into your truck, it’s still a baby with that mileage.. on the other hand, it would be nice to have more features as you stated. All features listed besides the ACC could be added to your current Tacoma.

You have a beautiful truck that's barely broken in, - keep it. But go put some sliders or running boards on before some big O' Dodge comes and park up against it and puts some ugly door dings on it.

Keep it! And if you don't, be dang sure you get the 6spd. Otherwise, I think you'll regret the auto 3.5.

Beautiful Tacoma you have! I don't regret the '18 auto. Said it many times on this forum as had a multitude of others. Does the job it supposed to, tough and extremely durable. Makes an altogether perfect platform for my needs. Pure quality Toyota, like yours. If you can afford it, keep yours, put it back stock to peak its incredible Tacoma value and buy an '18/'19. Or keep yours like it is for you to enjoy and purchase a Limited ! You will never regret the new Tacoma, as has many, many 10's of thousands of other '18 owners. An incredible machine. Nothing is perfect....Live it up!

You put 4K a year on a truck. Keep it and enjoy. I do that in a year and a few months.

Nice, paid off, clean as a whistle.... put a nice new head unit in there, add some cool sliders, and feel all 'fresh and stuff' for another year or five. Wait until Toyota announces the next engine/tranny package and decide between the three (what you have, what's current, and what's announced). Likely the next engine/tranny combo will be either a) much more refined than the current setup, or b) a direction you don't want to go.

My FJ had just hit 10 years and a little short of 200k miles. I had no desire to sell it since it was my backup vehicle and did everything I asked of it. I would have kept it until it just didn't make sense to keep it any longer. Unfortunately, I got the bug to convert my Macan to a Cayman... and the FJ just wouldn't do for taking the wifey and I around on errands and the town at night. The Taco is 'okay' at that, so I'm okay with it.

As for the 3rd gen... fundamental mechanical issues with the drivetrain selection. Tuning and TSBs are helping tremendously, but you just can't get completely past the fact that it has two overdrive gears which really hose up the performance. If the gears had been spaced more linearly, then it would have been better. Having said that, and knowing what I know now, I would still buy the truck if I needed a new truck (which you clearly don't, though do want). But plan on the possibility of another $800 for a tune if you're ultimately unhappy with the new drive. I have the tune and it made a world of difference. Can't comment on the latest Toyota TSBs.

I absolutely love my '17 OR MT. However, if I had your truck, I would most certainly keep it. Yeah the new ones have a lot more bells and whistles but you have a very nice truck that at the rate you're going will never wear out. Take the money you would spend on a new truck and throw it into your retirement...you'll appreciate that money when you're 65 a lot more that you will a new truck now.

I wrecked a beautiful low mileage 2nd gen. Loved it. Replaced it with a 2018 and regretted it from the 3rd day off the lot when the "diff howl" showed up. Between that and the almost-unbearable (to me) transmission, I decided to take a loss $$$ and trade the truck for something else after two months.

I'd take a very extended test drive before making changes if I were you.

Yeah, if I buy a new one, I'd make some suspension and tire/wheel mods. And, as you mentioned, the gearing is tall. I test drove a 6 speed manual '18 and despite the additional horsepower, it felt no stronger than my 07. With bigger tires it would be ripe for some lower gearing. And, the suspension was soft but that's an easy mod.

If I decide to let it go, I'll let enthusiasts know first. So, I'd be sure to put it on this site.

Keep the truck. If you want something different get a different kind of car that is a fun experience. A 3rd gen Tacoma is so similar to a 2nd gen, especially in the functional capability of it, that you might as well keep it unless your 2nd gen has such high miles it’s at the end of its life. Yours has way low miles, so plenty of life left.

I think the big difference you'll see, is if you tend to use your full rpm range. My FJ had the 4L in it, and it was great for daily driving. Near linear response up to about 3-3.5k. But after that, it started making as much noise as acceleration. The 3.5L however, starts a little weak but then just pulls harder and longer. You just have to be willing to listen to it wind up. Those that are willing to regear are super happy with that choice.

Honestly, to me the 3rd gen felt like a 4 banger. I know the power is there in the higher rpm's. But on the road, it feels like a 4cyl. Again, just my opinion. Not here to argue. Many are happy with theirs.
