Pretty sure its just vehicle data recorded when theres a problem sensed by a computer. The only way it is transmitted is when Toyota hooks it up to thier scan tool. Im a Honda tech and its the same way. Once we plug into the car and start diagnosing, any info we see automatically gets sent to Honda.

The box has no transmitter in it, totally hands on. There are 15 states that require a court order to extract data. This started sometime around 2000 it covers stuff like speed, airbag deployment etc and is only 20 seconds of it. I'm sure they have become more sophisticated over the years but there isn't much stuff in there that any one would want. If you are real paranoid try one of these, products like AutoCYB, OBD Lock and OBD Saver.

I currently have my truck, house, and head wrapped in tin foil so I’m good. I just need to figure out how not to fall off the edge of the Earth disc. If the government, corporation’s want to track me , go for it, I’m not that interesting.

Yeah so will your phone unless you turn off all location based features, which is a large portion of what most apps use.

I know what you mean. I wonder if Toyota is subject to GDPR compliance in Europe?

Anyway, everyone attributes that quotation to Edmund Burke but he never said that. I read everything he ever wrote for my senior thesis in college, and the closest I ever found to that was in one of his essays bashing King George III: When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one-by-one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.

I had a 2016 Grand Cherokee and it would send an email to me monthly listing the current mileage, tire pressure, and if any maintenance was required. This worked off of the 3G antenna that it had built in.
Its not like vehicles are recording your conversations and uploading them to some website for everyone to read. If you're worried about your Tacoma tracking your routes and location, you should take another look at your fit bits and and smart watches, all the apps you have on your phone, and pretty much anything else that you use that has a WiFi or cellular connection. Welcome to 2018 fellas

Deep down this thread is probably causing a shit storm. These people who are worried about the government/people tracking and spying take this crap to a different level. I can’t tell you how many crazy’s came into the dealership or shop that I worked at thinking people had put some type of listen or tracking device in there car. Asking us to check their vehicle. Swearing that they know there is something hidden in or under the vehicle. I’m sure there are a few of those kind of people here. Extreme paranoia exists

I’ve only seen/heard of maybe 3 cases of this happening. Guy was a big drug dealer, so we assumed it was some law enforcement agency tracking him. Needless to say we didn’t touch that. The others were spouses trying to track them. Guessing they had concerns of infidelity.
