+1000. If you don't want to invest the 10 bucks (4 at harbor freight) in a set of flush cuts, you can use a lighter to dull the edges. It's not only skin either. I've seen them cut through jackets and cause shorts. They can tear up all sorts of stuff.

    It begins! Goodbye stock frankensub!

Well, shit. I dont know. I asked the guys at crutchfield what I needed and this is what they sent me. It says dual? I can still return if needed as I just started cutting MDF.

Thx for the help. I dont know much about this stuff but enjoying learning as I go.

You’re good. You’ll want to wire it in series

Hopefully this very crude drawing makes sense

Ok! Box done and wired properly thanks to u/destin_meeks.

Fits great under the dog platform. In retrospect I probably could have gone with a 10" as I'm right on the volume capacity limit for the 8.

Can't wait to wire up the amp and get this thing going tomorrow.

    Hmmm, looking at amp wiring.

Going to tap into existing sub wiring, should I just wire together the black/red for + and the Y/W for Neg as I only have one RCA input on the amp?

    Thx.

The amp has 2 RCA inputs. White and red. However, you only need one. But if you choose to only use one, do not combine signals. Use either the left or the right. Touching those pairs together might short out the radio.

Ah yes, by one I meant one pair of +/-. Thx. Back at it. Garage fire imminent.

Just leave the fuse out until everything is wired up and you’ll be fine!

And be careful going through your firewall grommet. Don’t cut any existing wires, and don’t let your new wire run up against any metal

    Finally finished!

Ran the amp power through the small grommet on drivers side firewall.

I have a 6M so I think it's important to note to immediately head to the sidewall with the power wire once its through the firewall as it comes out right above the clutch assembly.

Mounted under drivers seat, tapped into existing sub wiring.

I will note I placed carpet patches where the wires crossed the sharp bare metal to protect from wearing.

Only thing I can't figure out is now I can turn my head unit on with no key in ignition. I wired the remote as indicated and left the last 2 wires (brown, white/grey) uncut on the existing sub harness.

Aside from that is was super easy and sounds killer!

Big thanks to u/destin_meeks. If you're ever in Co any Vail Resorts lift ticket on me.

You want to turn your head unit on with no key? Any particular reason why?

Oh, no no. I would like it to operate as stock. Turn on with acc, off with shut down of truck.

After I installed everything I now need to manually turn on and off the head unit, even if no key is in. So if I turn the truck off and remove the key, the stereo stays on until I manually turn it off. I guess if it doesnt constantly draw on the battery I guess its not a big deal. Its just kind of annoying. Maybe I wired the power wrong?

try this and see if it works.

Disconnect the remote wire from the amp

    Does the radio turn off?

If so, turn the key to accy and see if radio comes on

If it does, get some music going and see if the amp comes on
    .
    .
    .
    .
Kicker amps sometimes (especially if the input level is on HI) will use their built-in auto turn-on feature and then use the REM as a 12v output that can be used to turn on additional amps.
Because the grey wire we used at the factory amp harness is ACCY and not REM, this could backfeed to the radio's ACCY wire and cause the radio to think the truck is on.

    hopefully that make sense?

Ok, great! That’s one of those little quirks that I don’t even think the user manual explains. I’ve only learned it by calling other installers when I’ve run into similar issues!

Good job on the install! Clean and tidy!

    Thanks man!

Hopefully some of this info helps some others where I was starting a few weeks ago.

I'm afraid, and certain, this has started the trip down the rabbit hole to keep upgrading.
