This is just one example of third party ratings on reliability. There are many many more. This is why Toyota built 10.3 million vehicles in 2013. And that's after all the recalls and a major natural disaster big enough to effect the economy on a global scale.

Toyota's reliability is positively stellar as far as I'm concerned. :)

My last Tacoma had only ONE down day in 17 YEARS when it needed front wheel bearings installed.

    I totally agree, Greg

I bought a new 1997 T100, and after 100,000 miles never even had a light burn out, just normal maintenance, brakes, tires, etc.

I hope this new Tacoma is as reliable. In my opinion, Japanese quality and design towers above anything the UAW has to offer.

I read up on Toyota in Consumer's Guide and here in Tacoma World. Purchased a 2014 access cab, auto. 4-cyl. and have no regrets. Also, it has a sticker in the door jam noting it was built in Texas. Enjoy your good judgement buying the Toyota.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Your Tacoma came from a farm, that alone explains why you had to replace so many parts on it. Farm trucks are beat to shit and neglected beyond belief. They usually hammer on em until they blow up or rust apart. I myself would never buy a farm truck unless I was going to use it for a wheeler and mod the hell out of it.

This is America, only YOUR opinion is what's important. Enjoy your truck, and remember to wave and smile when you pass by the broken down trucks on the side of the road. :)

I saw so many on the interstate yesterday haha, an old Dodge RamCharger and an older Chevy truck and a few cars which I didn't know what they were. Glad to have my Tacoma and know I can trust it to take me anywhere I want. And if it does break down, I got a toolbox full of tools and a few spare parts like fuel filter, spare fuses and relays, and a few other odds and ends. The common suspects.

To buy "made in America" is a loaded request these days. You can find documentation that some domestics are more foreign made than some imports, if that makes any sense. ie: Domestic model -insert here- made with more foreign made parts and out of country assembly than a Toyota. Those 'Merica!' peeps complaining that next time you buy American might have their heads explode when you tell them, "I did! This truck is more American than yours!"

that was the intention, I picked it up for cheap for a hunting/wheeling rig cuz it ran decent and the body is surprisingly straight for a farm truck. I went into it knowing that it needed some work, the frustrating part is that its never ending. Every time I fix one thing and think "ok now I can enjoy it" bam something else pops up, and I'm probably into it at least 4-5 times the initial purchase price just trying to keep it road worthy. The roughest part to swallow is not even the fact that it keeps breaking, its what it costs each time something breaks and I do all my own labor so I'm just talking parts. Thank god for rockauto and Amazon to soften some of the blow, but on parts that are dealer only its best to have a tub of vasoline handy when you walk up to the parts counter. Like I said I enjoy the hell out of it when its actually running and its awesome in the hills because of its size, I had plans to actually build it some for wheeling but all those funds have burned up keeping it alive.

you guys that have had good luck with your Toyotas, I'm happy for you, its just not been my luck. I use my trucks as trucks, they pull, haul, plow through 2 feet of mud/snow if that is what the task at hand requires. I've drove Chevy since the day I turned 16 and have never had any major problems that I didn't cause, and in my younger days I was pretty rough on them but they kept ticking. I still have a duramax and love it but didn't want to beat it up in the hills while hunting, hense the Tacoma purchase. Like I said before there's good or bad experiences in any brand. I'm sure alot of those 'merica types referred to in this thread have never owned a Toyota, but there's also probably alot of Toyota fans on here bashing American vehicles that have no experience with them either.

edit: and yes some of my chevs also came from farms

Wow. Wouldn't have imagined this thread was still going. I see it started up again recently. I started this thread shortly after buying the truck.. 2 years ago. Guess what? Hasn't missed a beat and I've put around 20k on it since then. Still going good. Is frame rust an issue? I read one guy saying it could be with my year :/
I drive 6 miles of gravel everyday so the trucks impossible to keep clean, although I believe the frame is undercoated.
Now I need to go back and read my original post!

See “Made in America Auto Index” (Kogod School of Business, 2018). Tacoma shows up around 18 out of 112... higher than Ford F-150 4x4 3.5L, Expedition 3.5L, Navigator, Chevy Colorado diesel, Dodge Durango. However some Tacoma models appear on the list again around 40. I think “TDC” stands for total domestic content”. Tacoma is pretty high at 71.

Well that is cornfed good old boy mentality. And it's a bandwagon mentality... when all your friends are driving and loving big American trucks and hating the imports, it just catches on. I'd like to see their faces when they learn the Tacoma is made in Texas, by Americans, with many American-made parts. This attitude just doesn't make any sense. The design and engineering used to be the only Japanese thing about them, and I don't even know how much of that is true anymore. Let's just say the name TOYOTA is Japanese and that's enough for some people to hate it. Pure ignorance. I love my truck.

Well I don’t believe “so many people” hate Toyota. They sell more vehicles in the US then any other brand. When it comes to trucks, Americans prefer sometimes a more patriotic stance. The American truck has always represented the American worker. When it comes to reliable and dependability it’s important to not go by what people say. Look and observe. There are tons of old American trucks still on the road. Tons. Americans make good trucks Toyota makes good trucks. I bought a Toyota because I simply trust the brand.

    Definitely where he lives.

But to answer the original question....the generation that's just about gone had a thing against buying anything either made in Japan or by a Japanese company. That was either because they could remember when the early Japanese products weren't good, or because they lived thru WWII. (the whole Pearl Harbor thing)

Younger people give the argument that the profits go back to a foreign country, but they don't realize that Toyota has 14 manufacturing plants in North America. Profits may go elsewhere, but that's a LOT of paychecks going to American families.

I buy Toyotas because friends that buy American cars start dumping all kinds of money into them if they keep them longer than 5 years.
    My wife's RAV4 is 17 years old, has 150K
    My son's RAV4 is 14 years old, has 150K
My daughter just traded in her 18 year old, 200K RAV4 that was still a reliable daily commuter.
