Hello! My friend and I are going to go to the desert (not yet chosen which one) and want to keep in touch with each other. What models can you advise? The 2018 model list at http://thebestwalkietalkies.com/long-range-walkie-talkies-review/ offers the BaoFeng and Midland brands. Are they good? I do not know what to choose, I will be grateful for any advice

Anything that's an FRS walkie will be about the same. The dual band ones are for those who are HAM licensed

Well the feds caught on they basically are illegal there is no band they use that does not require some type of license either ham or commercial and they are starting to enforce it. A quality radio they are not. GMRS radios are unlicensed with a max of 2 watts and thing beyond that a license is needed. Do not believe their range ratings unless one of you are on a mountain top If you want reliable communications for recreational use get a ham license.

FRS is unlicensed. Gmrs is basically a way to play type of deal . It does get you a bit more power than fms. The GMRS license is good between your whole family though , which is nice. And some of the mobile unit put out some juice . For perspective cb does 4/12 watts legally.

This one does 15w. There's another that's more expensive that does 40w..

But if you and your buddy are staying relitivelr close to each other CB or a handheld walkie should be fine. Just showing you options
