Stock sport capability

Hey all,

Had a random question for you guys, I'm looking to take a road trip from NYC area to Utah, CO, and Arizona.

I'm just wondering how "off road" the sport can go or if anyone has any suggestions of places to go?

The trip is primarily to see the desert and just explore. Were hoping to camp while out there in the middle of nowhere and see some great sights!

Could have been worded better, but this is the jist of it .Not looking to go crawling or anything close to that, something tame with great views that the taco can handle

 

You can do all of that with the sport 4x4, make sure you have good tires and some recovery gear if needed.

 

All Tacos are more capable than given credit for.

If you are going to be in the desert, be sure to have a set of traction boards.

 

If driving in the sand perhaps a nice portable air compressor like the

$98 viair 88p portable compressor kit (12V, 120 psi, forup to 33" tires)

viair 88p would be good to have on hand in case you need to air down. Only about 50 bucks on Amazon

 

Just make sure you've got good tires. Don't venture too far off road unless you're sure of yourself, or you've got other vehicles in the group.

Stock trucks can go on a ton of trails. I've ventured on plenty of the trails without needing a locker. Just high-clearance and 4WD will get you to a lot of places. You will have a ton of fun.

 

Thanks guys! Do you think I'd be screwed with the stock sport tires? Not looking to do anything crazy.. ie sand and some rocky inclines?

 

Which ones do you have? The 2017s (at least) came with either Toyo A30s, Goodyear Wranglers?, or Firestone Destinations. I have been pleased with the Toyos offroad for a stock tire. I won't use it again though. The Firestones do not look like a good offroad tire, more like a passenger car tread, IMHO.

 

I’ve been on some moderate rated trails in my sport and had no issues so far. Went pretty far up Mt. Antero in it and It was a blast.

But, the only modification I do have are some AT tires and that can make a large difference.

The stock sport tires are more or less highway tires and I know from experience that they don’t like mud and sand much. Didn’t get stuck but had to really get on the gas a few times on the backroads before I got AT’s put on.

Some rocky inclines in 4x4 or 4 low should be no issue. Sand you may want to air down for and be cautious in for sure. And definitely get that compressor. I have the same one as above and used it to air up and down on some of the really sharp rock areas and it did great.

Otherwise I mostly kept it around 30psi for clearance reasons and did fine minus one ding on the exhaust pipe where it crosses under the cab.

But it’s far more capable than you’d expect. I’d venture to say it will tackle more things then you’d be comfortable with in the first place. At least that’s true for me.

 

This subject always cracks me up. I grew up in the Colorado mountains, and drove my '85 Toyota SR5 Extra-Cab up trails you wouldn't imagine. No lift, open axles, no traction control or Crawl Control.
Driven carefully and picking the right track, these trucks can go some great places. Just be aware of your capabilities, and have a friend and recovery gear (or at least the recovery gear) and you won't be disappointed.

PS - Not knocking the locker, TC, or CC. Those are great additions, but bone stock these trucks are plenty capable.

 

Your safest best to avoid getting stuck, slow and steady. Completely stock with factory Toyos for the sport, I've done mud, water, rocks, and wet rocks. On trails with others, will go on 4HI and they'll spin tires, I always go 4LO and I have yet to spin a tire, lose traction, or get stuck.

As everyone said above, way more capable that you may think.

 

There are a lot of Fantastic trails and locations you can do mild off road and get into great camping spots along the way, much of it will depend on how much time you plan to do the trip in and when Idaho has a lot of Excellent locations and so does Utah do your research for BLM location and you will be able to find lots of good spots that are free camping with low pressure of others being there. make sure your tires are good stock tires will work for a lot just carry a tire repair kit (learn how to use it first) and small 12 volt air compressor.

Be aware of Cellular coverage many location you may not have any so it is harder to get out of trouble if alone just you and your rig not with others and their rigs, Pay attention to the weather hard rains could make easy off the beaten path road a mess and not so easy.

 

Listen to the OR guys and you'll wonder if you can even make it to the mailbox and back. You'll need 4low for speed bumps!

Seriously though, the truck will go further than you probably are willing to take it.

 

The skewp seems to bunch up a lot of panties for those who don't have one so I guess that's one capability.

Get a good set of not too aggressive all terrain tires. I have had very good luck with Michellin LTX/AT2's. Very good on the highway and on backcountry roads and trails.

 

Sounds like you're fine completely stock. Although, a good set of all-terrains will inspire confidence and make things a little easier on you.

I have an off road and Wildpeaks. I still get stuck all the time.
These are the best $80 you can spend. They have never failed to unstuck me.

 

PS - let me know where in CO you'll be, I can send you on some trails your Tacoma will be great at, but will be awesome to explore (As can many others here)
