Does anyone have any experience with Fold-a-Top G4 Elite tonneau cover and the KB Voodoo tonneau cover rack mounts on a 2017 TRD Dbl Cab w/5ft bed?

    Bump ...

I am actually curious about this as well. Same Taco, owner of a Fold-a-Cover G4 Elite and looking to add the KBVoodoo Bed Rack for tonneau cover, or at least add it to my list of things to buy (Pending wife sign off :)). Looking at pictures of the bed rack and the tonneau, the short bed rack seems to allow the back cover to be opened up. Since the G4 has 3 folds, vs the oem 2 folds, its small enough to fold up.

The other issue would be how the G4 is installed. The bracket would have to go under the G4 side rail, which then loses its "water tightness" and would require some MacGyvering on my end.

Is the idea behind the brackets that they would only be attached when needed and removed the rest of the time or are they permanently attached? I also have the G4 and don't see how the brackets would fit without causing fit problems with the G4 cover, not to mention losing the ability to use the cover except in the closed position. It doesn't seem to be a very functional combination with the G4 as a permanent attachment.

I think from what I read on other forums, the bracket will actually go under the rail that is permanently installed on the bed of the truck. Therefore making the brackets a permanent installation with the rail. I'm guessing that would be up to the owner and what the needs are. Any bracket we use using the KB Voodoo system, would require the brackets to be installed permanently (to avoid taking the actual rail off).

You are correct, if you keep the bed rack on all the time, then it defeats the purpose of the tonneau and we wouldn't be able to open it. BUT... there are two options here. 1) Remove the bed rack when not in use off the tonneau bracket (the bracket would always stay on). 2) Opt for the different option with KB Voodoo which is the hi rise bars. ....... Not saying its ideal, but it is options.

I actually may be going for option 3 if i really want a bed rack with a tonneau. Sell my current G4 tonneau, get some money back, and buy the Pace Edwards tonneau. I am currently researching those and seeing which one is the best as they have several options in ranging prices. That will give me the freedom of a retractable tonneau with full use of the bed, with a bed rack over it. I love my G4, and its been great, but we are limited with tonneaus and bed racks. :(

@Otis1382 Are you looking for a modification with the Bed Rack or Hi-Rise bars? I have pictures I can upload later on, I ended going with the Hi-Rise bars.

Bed rack with there tonneau cover brackets. I'd still like to see yours. The brackets are 3/16 thick. Whatever you have sure would still be helpful to see. Thanks for the help.

I'll post some picture tonight. Hopefully I do not forget, just message me to remind me. Did require some work. But it works like a charm.

Quick right up: I'll talk about what I did for mine. Pictures Below.

    1. Remove Bedrails and remove all existing weatherstripping. The remover of the weather stripping can be a pain, but some goo gone and heat gun will do the trick. I used some nail polish, Hair dryer, and blade to scrape off the old weather strip. Thats all I had in hand.

    2. With Bedrails and tonneau removed, I went ahead and installed the Hi-Rise Bars on the truck.

    3. With the weather stripping off, and the 3/16" plate thickness, it does create a big gap in between the two brackets. Therefore a thick weatherstrip that can be compress would be needed.

    4. Quick run to homedepot, bought some Rubber Foam weatherstripping, 3/4" wide, uncompressed i believe was 7/16" and can compress down to 1/4". Install Rubber Foam on Tonneau Rails.

    5. Place Tonneau Rails over Bracket, and start tying and securing rail ends. The rails ends, the foam was able to compress down nice and snug. I cut slits on the foam where the brackets hit to allow the tonneau rails to compress down properly and close to the edge.

    6. Knowing that even with the slits, I will still have a gap where the foam meets the bracket, I decided to just go ahead and place some black RTV/Silicone on the outside edge of the rail.

TIP: I placed the rubber foam closest to the inside of the rail, leaving about a 1/4 inch of space. This 1/4" would be where the silicone will go and seal the from the elements. Adding protection before any water can hit the rubber foam. Quite frankly I just didn't trust the rubber foam from being the first line of protection and water sipping through.

    7. Compress everything down, Tape everything off to run your silicone seal ( I do not have a picture of that), run silicone, smooth it out with your finger, and peel off tape before it dries off, and clean install.

Challenges: The Tonneau doesn't sit flush anymore in the middle since the rail is sort of bent up in the middle, just make sure the two small metal latches at the end of the cover hit metal plates when it is all closed. Take a peek and see what I mean, sort of a locking mechanism to the cover down once it is all closed down.. But I do not get any water in the bed of the truck, except for a failure of the locking holes of the tonneau itself toward the tailgate end. I need to run a warranty claim on that.

If you go with the rack, I am guessing your challenge may be more of how close the front bracket will be to the front of the tonneau secure point. Might want to check that out. Also, the my front bar is installed directly behind the middle permanent secure point of the tonneau ( The section where either the front part flips on, or the three parts fold over onto. FYI, I have not opened the tonneau since I installed the hi-rise bars. the bars are on 24/7. I can open the front completely, and then back almost all the way with the bars on.

Two Goodie Pictures of camping trip I did this past weekend in West Virginia. Temps hit mid 20s throughout the night. This was after a full day of exploring the mountains and hitting some trails. And yes, bone stock Tacoma Sport Manual Transmission has handled every technical trail that other modded Tacos have done, at the expense of side steps, driver side, bent up, stock skid plate, scratched and dented, and a minor scratch on the transfer case (chose a bad line).

Not sure if this picture works. Thats the underside of where i put the new weatherstrip. Aside from that, nothing else was modified. I did not adjust or cut anything on the actual components of the G4.
