I’m funny about taking advantage of these. Still doesn’t really feel right.

I’m happy with my 10% discount at Lowe’s and Home Depot...and free Elite membership at Tandy Leather.

I’ve never really been one to take advantage of free shit for my service, it just never sat well with me. I think it’s good business sense on the part of a lot of these businesses as most people bring their families and buy 2 or more meals while they’re getting their free one. I’ve got a few shitbag coworkers that take the day off just so they can go load up on a weeks worth of free food at Applebee’s, subway etc. In no way implying you are a shitbag, and you are certainly free to do as you choose. I will be going to work tomorrow like I do every day and paying for my lunch. Thank you for your service and happy birthday btw. Don’t forget to pray to Saints Mattis and Puller today.

Here is the major problem with Veterans Day freebies... retailers very rarely check for Veteran IDs. Which means that ANYONE can go and receive these gracious “ Thank you Veteran “ deals.

I wish someone would take donations throughout the year and then close the restaraunt to cook and cater to their local veterans home.

I wouldn't necessarily call that a problem. If the merchant wants to be sure they are not giving meals to someone who's not a Veteran. They can ask for some proof, Mil-ID, VA-ID, DD214, a picture of them in uniform, etc...

Sorry if I offended anyone over this free meals for Veterans on Veterans day but if a retailer or restaurant is thanking Veterans this way I applaud them

The places I listed there's over an hour or more wait to be seated and seems very popular here in the High Desert of Socal . Also all places I listed do ask for Military ID , I use my VA ID card

It's funny how other forums such as Military forums are all for this and others like TW frown upon it

Not around here. The VA is printing veteran IDs, and Texas puts the word “VETERAN” on your driver’s license if you take a DD-214 with you to renew. Most places around here ask you to prove your status.

Lowe’s was really strict about it “to prevent the privilege reserved for those who served from being abused by those who didn’t.” Can’t say I blame them.

I usually go with my Uncle a retire SCPO. Also if available my buddy from school, he was an Army SFC, I was an AF MSgt. While we didn't serve together, we started with that common bond and got along really well.

That’s because you both speak SNCO (another retired MSgt here). I work at the VA with a lot of retired SNCOs and officers of all branches. I find the old SNCOs get more done than the officers because we’re masters of a skill officers don’t have - following a coffee cup around and letting it guide you to problems faster than waiting until problems find you.

Oh, and I keep crayons in my desk for Marines...because y’all ain’t yourselves when you’re hungry.

I'm with @CaptAmerica on this one. I don't feel right taking advantage, I chose to serve, feels cheap and lame running around getting a bunch of free crap "because I'm a veteran" kind of takes away from the honor of serving if you ask me.

I had someone pay for my meal at a McDonalds shortly before I retired. I was embarrassed, still not sure why because I understand the sentiment behind it.

My feeling was “give it to the Airmen - I’m good.”

8 years later, I paid for a SPC’s meal at a Subway outside Ft. Leonard Wood. I felt immediately better having paid it back by paying it forward.
