It’s all what you make it. If you want to join, and actively participate, so be it, or just join and go socialize. They’ll be happy to have you either way.

100% agree with this statement. Totally feels weird and I try to avoid it. 10% at Lowe’s is solid.

I am a member of the local chapter of Yhe Marine Corps League.
My primary function is recruiting new members.....

I focus on those under 50

Because the younger Marines are the future of the organization. Plus they have all the energy!

I think it’s the evolution of social media and membership age within the organizations. I’m also a Freemason, and membership is down a little there, too. With a generation raised on social media and virtual connectivity, real in-person fraternity is “quaint.” We’re having to evolve a with the times, and the old-timers are resistant to change. I suspect the VFW is the same. Bingo and beer doesn’t have the same appeal to our younger veteran generation than those who came before us. There are generational cliques within the lodge, and I suspect they exist within the VFW too.

I don’t know what the cause is but I don’t know anyone I’ve served with who is a member of the VFW.

I read, you need people to do the work....
Maybe not the bingo, but the cheap beer does. I think people come around later in life as they spread around the country and start looking for people with similar backgrounds and experiences.

I scoffed at it initially, but then got interested when my father in law said the post would pay half of my lifetime duties. I’m slowly getting more involved as time goes by. I’ve tried to get the post more active in social media, but as Capt said, the old guard is resistant to new technology. Our post is thriving with social members, new and old, but active life member numbers are static at the moment.

Not so much to do the work, as much as be open to new ideas.

Old guys hate change of any kind.

The Honor Guard I am was in two ceremonies yesterday.
One at the main park in town, and one at the high school which has a Vietnam memorial, was established about 28 years ago and I am the youngest at 63!
All older folks at City Park, say 45 n up.

Mostly high school kids at the high school, including a group from the local JROTC to present the nation's flag along with the flag if each branch of service.

These organizations are slowly fading away....
