Call BS on what? Those are the directions I read too... it says you can inflate by mouth as you provided the example "for first time use"

Repeated inflation on a 10day+ trip by mouth is a whole new ball game, and is going to create moisture in there, combine that with it being folded up in a tote+ some heat ...mold is gross.


Im not familiar with the technology inside of these things at all, nor can I find a picture of a cross section in my brief hunt... I do have OBA already plumbed into habitat, I was thinking a mechanical pump might inflate it too fast, not allowing the foam to properly expand when inflating...

I wouldn't be worried about it if the only consideration was over inflation, thats simple to avoid.


Hopefully once they have been out for a while there will be more clarity.

I was calling BS on that review stating "1-2 hours to inflate to 90%", they must be talking about letting it self inflate. I have unrolled mine and inflated it in about 5-10 minutes several times just fine. I personally see no reason not to use some kind of pump or bag to speed things up.

Went to east expo over the weekend and got to check out all the mainstream gear. The big thing this year is the shell/tent combos. Ive been thinking about jumping from a rtt to one but my budget definitely restricts that. I havent been around any in person untill this past weekend and honestly was thinking about a gfc due to the price. After the expo and checking everything out i realize that its just not worth it. Infact all of the clamshell desings were really a let down to me for what they cost. The habitat was really the only one that i got extremely excited about and could see myself purchasing. ( no offense to the other vendors ). But the design allows for so much more space. And kind of seperates the sleeping space from the bed space. Definitely out of my budget but if i ever decided to go a camper shell / tent the habitat would definitely be my choice.

And also the quality of the shell its self was top notch. Felt almost bomb proof honestly. The gfc felt exactly how its marketed “ light “ which is not a bad thing just something i picked up on.

 

I'm surprised how quickly all those wedge campers have taken off. The price point isn't THAT much lower than a Habitat. But hey, the more options for people the better! The space inside, and the separation of the bed and sleeping space you mentioned is what I like the most.

Maybe next year you'll be heading to the Expo East again with a Habitat! I had a pretty much stock Tacoma at my first NW Overland Rally, along with a ground tent, and the next year I had my Habitat! What a difference. And speaking of Expo East? Did you enjoy? I had a fellow SAR member ship his rig cross country so he could attend with it. I think I better stay away from the rally's and expos for awhile... the list of want to haves has grown far to fast lately.

 

From what I saw it was a complete mess there.

Enjoyed the expo and seeing all the new designs and the new features some of the companies. But i wish more vendors had stock items discounted to sell on site. But prices of things seem to be getting higher and higher in this “industry” just like aluminum boxes the size 2 shoe boxes priced at $300. Just blows my mind. And you can tell the majority of the people that purchase a lot of the items marketed at the expo probably think engaging 4wd and making their way through the muddy field to park is off roading and justifys all their hip gear. Not hating on the gear really but just the way its marketed to people. I enjoyed ATR 10 to 1 over the expo just for the reason of actually putting your gear to use and see what setups really work in the inviorment they were designed for. But I’ll definitely go back next year. Its a great excuse to gawk over off road gear and camp for the weekend.

 

Did you end up getting a megamat?

 

I did get it at REI with 20% discount, but did not have a chance to play with it yet - because of the fires, the area quality was "Very Unhealthy" so limited time outdoors. Also had to fly to Denver on Sunday, but will experiment with it next weekend.

I feel for this guy, buying a Vagabond Drifter and finding out it just didn't work for him. I'm not sure a Habitat would have solved his issues, as he's going to an 8 ft bed truck and a FWC, but still this is an example that might be good to leave here for anyone thinking about a wedge vs Habitat vs anything.

I was in the AT booth at expo. It was a great time, but very muddy.

 

Got a promotion at work and will be spending my January in Denver for training. I am 99% sure I’ll be opting to drive the Taco out... unless my wife lets me steal her Infiniti. HA!

Besides bringing my snowboard I’ll be hauling out both pair of snowshoes a pack, fart sack and the Hab. Anyone interested in broing it out and do some mild winter camping in a NF or the like?

 

Well, my wife and I learned this weekend what people mean by condensation in a tent... WOW. The temps were in the mid to low 20s at night over the weekend in Cheney, WA. The first night we had the Mr. Buddy heater going for about 30-40 minutes before we shut it off and went to sleep. We woke up to frost on the inside of the small plastic windows and a few other places inside the tent. Our sleeping bags and blankets all had a layer of moisture on them... this was well beyond "damp". As it was quite cold when I woke up, I climbed outta bed and fired up the heater again. Within a minute I was being dripped on repeatedly. I climbed back up into my sleeping bag only to have more dripping on my face. During the day, we opened up the Habitat and let it dry out, which it did. The second night we only ran the heater about 3 minutes before hitting the hay. Once again, the night saw more dripping water.

I've since done a lil reading online and found that we humans really do put out a lot of moisture into the air. I was hoping it was 100% the fault of the Buddy heater... but alas, it was not. My wife and I are now thinking of going to a furnace, probably Propex... Won't be this winter, but I'll be starting a lot of research soon to make sure we make the best choice for us. Honestly, the specs of the Webasto look better, but Propex seems a bit easier to install and also doesn't require anything special for higher altitudes.





O, and here's why we were in Cheney in the first place!

My mother in law was invited (along with the fam) by a friend to join in on "Turkey Murder Day". This wonderful gentlemen raised, from chicks, about 45 turkeys this year to give away for Thanksgiving dinners, and he has been doing it for several years. He and a few others taught some different methods of killing the turkeys, and how to pluck them. They didn't force you to kill or pluck if you wanted a bird, but i'd say at least 50% of those there took part in picking a turkey, slaughtering and plucking. Luckily the pros took care of the cleaning Here's a pic of my wife standing next to the turkey she just helped pluck. It was a delicious early Thanksgiving for us. I don't think this will become a new tradition for us, but I will say that it was a wonderful experience and does bring you much closer to your food. Maybe even got us to give a little extra THANKS for Thanksgiving this year.

 

Leave a window on each side cracked an inch or two. Helps keep the condensation down.
