Check Engine Light - BACK AGAIN x3!

I was able to speak to my service advisor this morning after playing phone tag. He said that they disconnected (and left it disconnected) my amplifier and drove it around to see if the lights would come back on and they didn't. He said now that they see the lights back on they now know it is not related to the sound system (go figure, i didn't think it was anyway) and they will give my truck to a master tech. Does that mean they had the oil change guys working on my truck the whole time???

There are a few levels between lube tech and master tech but it's been clear from the beginning that they weren't taking this very seriously or making any real effort to actually diagnose it.

You have my sympathies for being jerked around so much. After they finally fix it I would have a conversation with the general manager about the whole experience including the wheel damage. I would also absolutely excoriate them on the survey. At least that will lead to the service manager having an uncomfortable conversation but I wouldn't expect it to change anything.

In the end though the lesson is never to use this service department again. This isn't one bad apple; these guys are doing what they are told. It is a profit driven department that doesn't care about happy customers or doing quality work.

 

I'm definitely frustrated with the how everything has been handled between the damaged rim (which no one owned up to) and giving them my truck for a 3rd time for the same issue. I've been trying to give this place a chance since i bought my truck from them and the next closest dealer is 20 miles away. I suppose i will give them until next Monday and if they don't have it figured out i will take back possession of my truck and bring it to another dealer and explain to them the whole situation.

 

So service advisor at dealership called me today and said that they put a new instrument cluster in my truck and the service advisor wants to drive it home tonight and back to work tomorrow morning, which would put 70 miles on it.

Is it me or does it seem like they still aren't fixing the root cause which is a speed sensor code?

Like a faulty cluster that's throwing lights on when there's actually nothing wrong with the vehicle?

Just throwing parts at the problem.

 

Reading that diagnostic procedure posted earlier, eliminating the sensor, the harness, and the ecm looks pretty simple. That leaves the cluster. Sometimes throwing parts at it fixes it. I hope so in your case. At least they are finally trying. A 70 mile road trip should be sufficient to prove it right? Did it come back with less than that? On many occasions I took customer cars home just to make sure.

 

As far as I can tell from the service manual, the speed data coming from the wheel sensors via the skid control ECU passes through the instrument cluster before making it's way to the ECM. One of the checks outlined in the same document tells the tech to hook up techstream, drive the vehicle and compare the speed reading on the cluster to what the ECM is seeing. The cluster could actually be the cause of this fault.

 

I didn't hear from the service advisor today so I'm guessing that the new instrument cluster didn't fix the lights.

Unfortunately that's what the manufacturer flow chart says to do. Since it's a warranty repair they need to follow it.

 

Well, after getting the truck back a week and a half ago and putting ~200 miles on it after the dealership replaced the instrument cluster the trac off light and check engine light turned on again. I used a friend's OBD2 reader and it read a P00035 code that said crankshaft position sensor A. This is different than the 031 code that the dealership said they read. I reset the CIL with the OBD2 reader and if it comes back on again I'm taking the truck to a different dealership.

 

My 2017 TRD OR with less than 17000 miles threw the check engine and TRAC light. It's at the stealership now with the wife (I had to work). 2 hours for them to even diagnose (so no code yet). Oh and yes I checked the darn gas cap to make sure it was tight (clicked). I am not looking forward to dealing with all the bullshit you all have went through.

 

on the wheel damage I would make them pull up the video . Every dealership has cameras on there lot at least where I live. I would raise hell lol .

 

My vote is CPS. When those things go bad lots of weird things happen. Just replace it and see if magically all your problems disappear.
