I was there when my locker installer helped me out with troubleshooting. He knew what it was when I called him up. He said its very common with tacomas, and that most people replace them not knowing its an easy fix. But I could perform this very easily, the soldering isn't hard at all.

Look at the thread I posted, the second pic shows the contacts soldered.

That is only true for the plastic gears/electric motors that engage the shift rail. The CVs, front drive shaft is always spinning. The high and low gears are constantly covered in gear oil.

One time mine wasn't engaging and it was either in the manual or on the little card on the visor to keep it under 3 MPH.

You might be thinking of the rear locker. You can’t be in drive when going to 4lo, which means if you are going 3mph, you’re coasting downhill. The sticker on the door says 5mph I think.

I'm pretty sure... I specifically remember thinking "how the hell do I know I'm going 3 MPH!?" And then I remembered the digital display. Let me investigate before I double down and put my foot in my mouth.

I wish that was the case. For me to get the most reliable engagement, it has to be a full stop, then a full stroke of the clutch, hold it, and flick it to 4Lo. Same for going back to 4Hi. It's not a big deal, just slow AF.

    Thanks.

Although, I know what it says. As we all know, 4Lo can be a bit tricky. What I posted is what gets my Taco in and out of 4Lo reliably. I wish we just had a nice manual stick instead of the knob.

Haha! It should all be M. A. N. U. A. L! Friggin' electric start. Back in my day, sonny, we used to walk miles in the snow just to crank start our school bus.

While we're at it, I want to be able to easily measure the candle power of my headlights.

    You know me! :jerkoff: :D

I never got to drive one of those. My aunt had an old Valiant with column shift well into her 70s, I think. Our HS had those old school drivers ed simulators, which we used for desks. They had column shift also. I was bummed that we didn't get to use them. Although, we would imagine our driving dreams all the time. Infinite ratios!
