Tacoma 2003 Fueling Problem

I have a 2003 Tacoma I recently bought used, It is a find running truck.

When I fill it up with gas I notice a problem, I take the cap off and when I start fillingthe tank with gas (The engine is turned off) the fueling nozze lclick's off.

I can not keep a gas flow going longer than a second or so the gas backs up to the neck of the filling pipe only draining down after it shuts off.

I had to pull the nozzle out of the filling pipe and barely squeeze the trigger on the nozzle stopping every two to three second to let the fuel run down the pipe, For some reason it is not venting the air out of the tank as I fill it.

The check engine light is not on

Also, I noticed that the tank filling line looks to be about a three quarter inch (3/4) Line, Why Toyota put such a small filler line I cant figure out.

Does anyone else had this problem and how to solve it.

I removed the filler pipe to check it for anything blocking it nothing found checked the rubber boot that connects it to the tank everything was clear. Cleaned it around where the gas cap screws on blowing it with air, still have the problem

 

Is it aftermarket tank?

 

A bad charcoal canister can cause the issues you're describing

 

had the same issue with my 2002 and really was a pain when refueling. i did fix it by replacing the vsv valve, might want to check the vsv.

Toyota told me that the charcoal canister would not cause air from venting as I fuel it, because all the power is off (engine turned off)
But I noticed their are alines going to the charcoal canister and I am thing myself about the vsv valve.
After I burn this gas out I going to pull the tank off, check it out then replace the vsv, It is the original Tank
The charcoal canister is up higher than the tank so I do not think gas go into it

 

Does anyone happen to know of someone who has a trailer hitch for sale? (frame bolting that will fit my truck)

My Problem when Fueling the fuel nozzle keep clicking off ever 5 or 6 seconds, This let me to headaches would not go down the filler pipe fast. I took the bed off so I could get to everything easy. I replaced the Roll over check valve part 77390 35010 and the gasket.
Took off The charcoal canister took off both valve and tested them and looked at the canister all was good put the back on when to put a couple dollars of gas still clicking off ever couple second went back and Now with out the bed on I pulled off the rubber elbow on the filler pipe going into the tank and used a flash light and looked into the found the problem The filler pipe extends about 3 or 4 INCHES in the tank Their is a cap on the end that was stuck closed the gas would not open when gas Hit it to pass into the tank. causing the nozzle to click off This part is the ONLY PART THAT TOYOTA CAN NOT GET OR FIND A PART NUMBER for it and they can not order
so I had to remover it and repair it best that I could. Everything is find now Fuel it fast and easy.
To Remove that part here is how
1 Remove the Fuel tank Breather 4 screws it is easy (on Top of That Tank) You remove this so as you can see inside the tank you at the part
2 Remove the fuel pump assembly so you get you hand inside the tank
The part is plastic and slide on and off it has snap clips to hold it in place I bend the tin end piece out on mine to open it the pulled it off the to make it flush It need to fit flush Mine was stuck closed pushed it with a screw and bent it.

 

I dunno why that last comment isnt pasted everywhere because its most likely the issue everybody is having with pictures and the explanation of fixing the issue…. I mean ive had to read so many dumb ass comments talking about how its the gas station pump itself and to hold it out of the tank a little or some bullshit saying to stay away from certain gas stations because of that. Complete idiots.. “dont squeeze the pump all the way”. Lol. Either way yes the evap system could be the issue or yes the vent tubes can be clogged or kinked, could be the valves crapped out on the evap system or filler neck issue but nobody has gotten into the actual tank being the issue, only glanced over the idea of it being “a little flap thats built into the tank” not being a replaceable part.. but aint nobody ever said shit about not being able to rip the damn thing slick off.. lol. Only thing thats for is anti siphoning and roll over which if you roll over im pretty sure theres plenty of other hoses and places the fuels going to drain out from , just not as fast as with that flapper installed.. i know thats the issue with mine because ive dropped the tank and blew out every single hose, tested all the valves with an Ω meter and with techstream triggering each. No codes, new filter, cap, pump,neck.. but still have the same issue filling.. only thing i didnt check was inside the tank where the filler tube goes into because left it on when dropped the tank and swapped it with a new one not looking.. plus to test this theory i shoved a small fish tank tube down the filler and hit the flapper. Was only able to get it to open less than 1/8 inch because was the only size tiny hose that would fit through and go into the tank.. then it took gas better but still would click off every 20 seconds.. sucks cuz gotta drop the tank again but at least this time it wont be full and weigh 120lbs. Having a full ass gas tank wedged between yourself and the bottom of the truck when your alone and pins you there was kinda hairy for me.. gas fumes getting me dizzy and spilling on me just enough to keep everything slick.. tanks about the same size as me and cant move it or myself but an inch at a time. Jack stands that was holding it up both fell then wedged themselves against the frame and tank then the tire is on the other side of me.. if i hadent of had a chain on the floor that I accidentally parked on to pull my ass out that woulda been a shitty way to go.. woulda been month or more before anybody found my happy ass too.. lol. Dont be dumb like me and think you can drop the tank with it full..

I removed that cap in the tank, checked all the vent lines and charcoal canister is perfect.. tested the valves on it as well as the tank.. still wont fill.. what i have noticed now though is when my truck is off, asleep, the damn thing will fart every couple minutes under the hood.. sounds like a quick wet poot and is random. Sometimes it will let a good one out thats like triple the length. Sometimes it sounds like somebody blowing into a cardboard tube with stuff inside it.. No gas smells, no burning nasty. And ive ran all the active tests on the vsv and fuel system which it all works when activated and the ecu sees the status change.. think its the vsv valve is just not actually opening but is sounding like it is? Or maybe it needs a stabilizer to settle its stomach and stop farting like a dog.. friggn in the garage trying to work on a pressure washer and for the first hour i didnt know what the hell was making the noise.. thought it was one of those prank speakers at first, then thought there was a critter under the hood.. then thought it was just me.. yea.. been a odd past couple hours..

 

The sound is normal. On the D/S fender there is a black box with lines going to it, this is what is making the sound. Take your fuel cap off to relieve the vapor pressure and the noise will stop. The roll over check valve is also a vent valve, see if you cab blow through the hoses that are attached to it.

 

So checked the roll over and lines are doing what they should. Figured out the sound under the hood, for god knows why, the radiator cap was bad and the overflow was right at the end of the hose in it where i let some coolant out taking off the timing cover cover to do the valve gaskets.. it would let out a little fart every 5 mins or around.. got that some gas x and im down to thinking the fueling issue has something to do with my lines under the hood.. think one of those vsv/ vacuum valves is going out or hoses are routed wrong. Soo..

Is the green line right? Cuz mine aint ran like that. And what the hell are the highlighted things? Cuz right now my regulator is ran from that dotted line on the intake right close to each other.. the silencer is dead and gone (hole plugged on intake tube) but everything else is like the drawing unless the actual vsv and vacuum valves are swapped.. havent checked that far yet.. but that highlited stuff i dont think i have on my shit.. either way i dunno what it would be..

But ive even traced out the lines going to/from the charcoal box and theyre both clear and routed to the box. If theyre in the right spots on the box is a different story..

Anybody ever had a critter post up above/ on the spare tire? Was under it tracing out the lines in my garage and damn possum jumped almost on my face and i had to pull a mission impossible and busted both my shins, both elbows and peed a little bit trying to hang on to the hot exhaust and driveshaft so it would go away and not at me.. lol. Yea i screamed like a little girl.. i tell ya.. possums or opossums, can go on and play in the roads all they want.. evil looking garbage monsters.. at least trash pandas look like people puppies..
