Do whatever you think is best. One accidental use of 4wd and you are screwed. Either you will destroy the pinion and ring gears at one or both ends. You may destroy U-joints, driveshafts, CV joints, transfer case or many other things. That will all depend on what surface you are on when it happens. IF I were to do this I would remove the front driveshaft as a precaution.

I don’t get the rush. Either do it all or wait. The risk vs reward doesn’t seem worth the potential for disaster. Your kid plays with the knob or someone turns it thinking it is something else. It isn’t about how possible or probable it is. It just has to happen once. If you can’t afford to do both at once right now how are you going to afford to fix all of that?

I’m probably going to catch hell for this but what would be the advantages of regearing a 2WD? Stock size tires vs 285/70R17

Just a comment from the 1st gen crowd, don’t shun me!

But in regards to ECGS, they are awesome to work with.

It cost me about $2500 for regear front and rear, with an ARB in the rear, shipped after core charges were refunded.

They do the solid crush sleeve spacer in both diffs, which I think they’re one of if not the only to do so, plus the needle bearing replacement in the front diff which is a long time problem.

Here’s the best part- it’s been about 2-1/2 years since I did my regear and my rear end is starting to howl, bearings likely.

I assumed I’d be up shit creek, but they said it’s under warranty still, 5 YEAR WARRANTY. Nobody matches that.

Best part, I want to gear down to 4.56’s from 4.88’s, and they’re only going to charge me for gears alone in that 3rd, the rest is replaced under warranty.

They’ve got my business for life.

If you pull the diffs you should be able to have the gears installed for $400. You don't need to replace bearing or anything if you are under 75k miles. If you want, throw a new pinion nut, pinion seal and crush sleeve at it. That's an additional $30 per diff.

I have had 17 axles regeared and I have never replaced anything. Most time with Toyota's I reuse the crush sleeves as well, I know shocking. If you sleep better at night spending $500 on install kits then go for it. I guarantee I beat my shit harder than most and the last thing I worry about are the diffs.

Most diff failures are from a shoddy install job, take it to a professional.

Why are some some changing the diff gears on their Tacoma? What are you trying to achieve by this? Is the gearing different then the Gen2?

Are a lot of third genners feeling lack of bottom end torque? This was the only reason i didn't buy one in 2016. I bought a 2013 instead.

Many here recommend Martin Mobile gear, so that's where I'll have it done in a few days. I've seen them work at Rebel Offroad, so they must be good.

My 2nd GEN gets all of its work completed by Chris at Jimahajer Garage in La Habra (ask for Felixx for quotes and Chris is the garage master tell them you were refereed by Hanzo), note they have their own 2nd GEN that gets a lot of TLC so they know 2nd GEN inside and out)).

Things I’ve gotten done or am scheduled to have completed by them:

BMC, Nitro 4.56 gears front & rear, mount & balance 285/75R16 BFG on TRD beadlocks, SPC adjustable UCA, King 2.5 adjuster coilover front & King adjuster shocks rear, StopTech slotted rotors, Porterfield pads & shoes, performance extended front & rear braided stainless brake lines, Timbren off-road bump stops front & rear, OME EL096R leafs, Archive Garage HH and cross tube, Magnuson SC and etc… always more things.

I put 5.29’s in my 2018 Pro. I bought them from East Coast Gear Supply. They were like $1400 and I installed the third member and clam shell. Once you return your parts they give you the core charge back
