I am replacing the seal while doing the ECGS bearing swap and am a little stumped. just want to make sure I don't do anything stupid. I got a seal removal tool and pried, just the rubber seal came out. I am under the impression the metal ring needs to come out with it?

Can I just use some penetrating fluid (keeping a towel in the hole so it doesn't go in the transfer case) or do I just need to keep working at it?

OR, can I just put the new rubber seal in without taking the metal piece out?

So many options! Thanks for the help.

    Here’s a good write up

Do you have the ECGS tool to extract the needle bearing? Don’t use the seal puller to do that.

The seal is one piece the whole thing comes out. Beyond the seal is the needle bearing that you take out and replace with the solid ECGS bushing, beyond that is the grooved race where the end of the CV axle goes in, don’t try taking that out.

It’s a good idea to replace the OEM seal with another. Put a piece of PVC the exact width of the seal and you can drive it in like the pics

I got the needle bearing out using the ECGS tool, my question about the seal was that it came out as just the rubber piece. I have some videos where it comes out with the metal ring. Since it's just the rubber piece, I feel like it can't get pounded back in with anything since it would damage it. Do I need to try and get the metal ring out too?

It has a metal ring and you need to take it out. What tool are you using to pull the old seal? I’ve removed seals with a flat head screwdriver and pliers. Carefully.

OK. That answers that then. I am using a seal removal tool, looks like a climbing axe. I will put a little more back into it!

it sounds like you didn’t get behind the ring with the seal puller tool, and only got hold of the rubber. You definitely have to get behind the edge of the metal part of the seal. Just be careful not to damage the mating surface on the diff where the seal goes.
