Looking to join the family.

Hey all. My current car is about to take a dump on me, so it's time to start fresh. I've loved Tacomas ever since I was a kid, and I think now is the time for me to finally stop buying 10 year old cars and get something that is going to last me. I'm currently looking at the new TRD Off Roads. If anyone has any sort of "tips & tricks" for a first time Tacoma buyer, I'd really appreciate it. Anything from what model I should be looking at to buying used vs brand new, etc. Thank you! (Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Like I said, I'm new.)

Do you recommend this to someone buying any new car, or just a Tacoma?

 

You are on the right track to a good choice! It all depends on your needs and wants. Every Tacoma is very capable in and off-road. Also depends how many mods you want to do. I wanted the rear locker so I went with the TTD Off-road. But you honestly can’t make a wrong decition as long as you end up in the truck best for you . Hope other can tune in more but I love my Tacoma it has already taken me places I didn’t think possible without major upgrades. I bought my truck for fishing and hunting and it has never let me down !

Buying anything your spending lots of $$ on you should test drive as much as possible. What’s good for me might not be good for you .. I test drove my Tacoma for 1 hour and I’ve been hooked since! Never a regret ! Matter of fact I love it more every single day !

 

Thanks for the input! So far, all I know for sure is that I need the crew cab and 4WD. I haven't gotten too in detail about what mods I'd like to have, but I'm open for suggestions.

 

Welcome to the forum. Some people find that they don’t like how the Tacoma shifts with the auto. That’s why they say drive it for an extended time if you can. I have no complaints about my off road after 17,000 miles.

 

Your in the right direction! I wanted 4 door and 4x4 and didn’t want a huge vehicle as it’s only me and my Girl and my dogs. This truck is absolutely perfect!! Some complain about things but I have honestly never experienced them!! This is my Favorite vehicle ever and I honestly don’t think much competes with the Tacoma for stock looks!! But I own a Tacoma and am on TW so I’m sure I am a little one sided lol !

 

My only suggestion is knowing if your a mod my truck guy or stock is fine guy. If you like modding your truck get the cheapest new one you can find. If you're fine with stock, maybe slightly bigger tires then look at the TRD offroad or PRO

If your planning on moding right out sr5 is a good choice .. they are very capable
And u can add your own parts how u want. I only plan on adding armour and lift and tires so TRD off-road was perfect for me. If you are a DIY’er like most on the site are then the sr5 is perfect ! Also remember Moding is dangerous! It’s very very addictive and there’s no rehab, YET! Lol

 

That's pretty much what this forum is about. Armor, lifts, tires, accessories.... it is endless

 

I didn't think I was a Mod guy, and I didnt do any lifts or anything like that, but have done alot of stuff to my truck which would qualify as a Mod guy now. I think in the first month i did more mods on my Taco then i ever did on my Frontier. I guess the difference is I WANTED the Taco, The Frontier was just transportation and cheap. Only you will know how much you want to invest in your truck but from what it sounds like, you are keeping it for a long while so Mod away! Oh, and TW will convince you of stuff you didnt know you wanted, then cannot live without it! Good luck and enjoy your new truck!

 

if you are already a costco member, or if not, $55 costco membership can save you thousands right off the bat purchasing with the Costco Auto Program. I live in an area where they dont deal very much because if i dont buy the truck today, someone else will tomorrow. so costco has saved me before, and it will again in the future. if you are gonna put the 4WD to use, might as well get the most capable one they offer in the TRD Off Road with its rear locker and crawl control. buy once, cry once.

 

Keep it stock for a while, don’t just spend money to spend money.
Over time you might find things you would like to “upgrade”. Look at the huge thread about what people did to there Tacoma today. Lots of cool stuff and gives you ideas of what you may want to do with your truck.

 

Should be for anything but if you read thru this forum the complaints are usually drivetrain related, best for you to make sure you like it before buying. Manual Trans is also an option for you as then you can choose when you shift.

 

You will find that slightly used Tacomas are almost the same price as the new ones. That is one of the reasons we like them so much. Find one you like and can afford and enjoy it. Post pics when you get one. Best of luck!

Update: I pulled the trigger yesterday and drove home in a white 2019 TRD Off Road with Crew Cab and Short Bed
