1st and 2nd gear have triple-cone synchros. You have to wait for all those sychros to spin up and match for the shift to go in. All other gears are single-ring synchronized. The quicker you can get the shifter into the next gate without losing too much rpm (200-300rpm) the less work the synchros have to do to match speeds and will make less noise and feel much smoother. If you have a new truck then you should drive it more to get everything broken-in.

Not surprising though. They came out with the Corolla Hatchback and are trying to position it as a "hot hatch", so they had to include a manual. Given that, probably was trivial to put it in the sedans as well. Not that I'm complaining though! Always happy to see more manuals on the market!

Not a fan of that design though. I bought my wife the last year of previous gen (2013) in the S model. I think those look much better. The only sad thing was that you couldn't get a nicer engine like the older XRS models when we got ours. Also that she doesn't drive manual, so I had to get her an auto...

On a different note, I'm approaching 1000 miles on my 2019 Tacoma and found out something cool about the cruise control (adaptive on mine, though not sure if that makes a difference or not) as I was driving around on the freeway today. You can set the cruise control and then shift between gears and it maintains your CC! My previous Vue would drop CC as soon as you pushed in the clutch, so you'd have to shift into whatever gear you were going into and then hit the Resume on CC to get it going again if you wanted. I just assumed it was the same in my new Tacoma, but was surprised when I was able to downshift from 6th to 5th, never touching brake or accelerator (just clutching in and out as I changed gears per normal) and as soon as I let out the clutch it kept right on going in CC. I was able to flip around between 4-5-6 since traffic was varying a bit. Between maintaining the CC between shifting and the adaptive-ness of it, I was able to keep it going for quite some time longer in CC than I'd normally be able to with minimal effort.

Maybe you guys knew that already, but just in case someone didn't... TIL!

I do believe that is part of the adaptive CC, actually sounds pretty cool, my truck shuts CC off as soon as I push the clutch in.

I am not sure if that is similar noise that I have after heavy off-roading, but clean your belt. Mine whines loud if the propeller or belt's are muddy/dirty.

It's another common issue with turd gens, same problem on auto. Me and my buddy have this problem.

Took it to the dealer for the HVAC Blower recall and asked for the shop foreman to sit in the truck with and identify the sound real quick. Apparently the noise is normal because we sat in another truck in for service and it made the same noise.

If you want to to check, get in your truck and rev the engine to 3000rpms and listen for a higher pitch whining sound that goes away as the RPMs go back down to idle.

Question for yall fellow MT do gooders.

I accidentally dropped the clutch and killed it yesterday ( I have a bum leg... bout as good as my excuse is going to get ) and immediately after the truck absolutely refused to start up. It wasn't a hard kill just a lazy feather and died. But it cranked and cranked and cranked without even trying to start up after said kill...
After about 10 mins or so of letting it sit it started up as usual with no issues.

Have any of you experienced this after a less than ideal stall?

I have not experienced this, but I have had it take a few more compression strokes to start after a short shut down when the motor is hot, esp in hot weather and compared to how quick it turns over for cold starts.

In my garage, I have noticed that there is some sound that happens when I just start to insert the key that makes me think that something is priming. So my best advice if this happens again might be to fully remove the key, put it back in, and try?

If I had anything to complain about when I stall is that I wish the sound system would not cycle off when you turn the key to start. Just a very minor nuance, but I don't see that small power draw being as critical as other things that might be on like the a/c, fan(s), or headlights.

I did cycle the key and tried again and still just cranked over without any luck... I even tried putting it in neutral and used hill start assist to try and start it up. No dice.

Only waiting seemed to have any effect on it.

I know you're rolling in a new 2018, but you might want to check the resting battery voltage and the volts during startup? The battery could be a bad one and ECUs can get buggy on low volts. One shorted cell will drop you to the 9V region and ECUs generally like to be above 10V.

That's about all that I got.

If you meant Clutch Start Cancel, that only overrides the clutch switch.

That's never happened to me, and I've killed my engine a few times in a similar way :anonymous:

The weird quirk with starting on my truck is this - if I shut the engine off for a short time, say a minute or two (long enough to check my mailbox), when I start it again it'll roll over only a couple of times and immediately flash up. It happens so quickly the starter winds up before my brain tells my hand to release the key.

Stalling is part of the fun. It has been much better after the TSB with the consistency.

That is funny that your hot start experience is opposite of mine.
