What's a good small offroading shovel?

I have a full sized shovel for serious digging, but thought I should get a little one so I can get under my tires easily in case I need to use recovery boards. What is a good "little" shovel?

I would rather use a full size shove, myself. I have been down in the mud and snow with those little folding survival shovels. You can get the job done but it sure isn't fun.

Here's what I use from Lowes as very handy to store behind seat and works well the few times I've used it.
Initially purchased for my 5 year old granddaughter to use while helping me on the property, but found it's great for keeping in the Tacoma for emergencies.

 

Having experience digging out with an E-tool... I would advise against it. It's a huge pain in the ass. Go with Krazy Beaver something like @Kevin Jones shared if youre on a budget.

 

Don't was your money on one of these gimmicks. Yes i have one, I got a good deal on it, and i really should just toss the stupid thing in the garbage. Go to a Lowes and get a short d handled shovel. Get a nickels file and sharpen the end of a shovel like you're suppose to. Chisel point and it will cut into the soil better than these gimmicks.

oh and being able to chip away at rocks/etc is cool, bit a pick axe works a heck of a lot better. Just another stupid overland bs gimmick and I bought it. I'll keep it and do my best to sway others from it.

This. Don’t do a fold up shovel, it will make you give up and walk home out of pure frustration.

 

Another vote for krazy beaver. I thought it was a dumb overpriced shovel until I actually used it. I was snow wheeling and my front driver tire broke through ice and I was in mud to my frame. The shovel was able to break through the thick ice with no issue to aid in the recovery. If I had to guess it was 1”-2” thick ice? After that I was sold.

 

Here’s my setup. I wouldn’t want a fold up shovel, the one pictured is a little bit small for me but it works.

Another vote for the Krazy Beaver murder spork. I disagree with the gimmick comment. I've broken plenty of HD shovels. This one is very stout. Thicker steel used in the head and FRP handle. Got some TW wheelers and me out of a bind a couple weekends ago.



Used it to fill in a rut, and then leveraged that 20-ft plus log up and over, to give a few more inches of clearance.

 

Looks like you should be carrying a peavy or two with you out there, also!

 

Had to look up a "peavy"... yes, I need that. See if I can get it trending for overlanding gear.

Cool, glad you got to use it. I’ve used mine plenty as well here on the job site and in off-roading. I’d still never buy another one, and go back to a normal d handled shovel. If your using it like a multi tool, which seems to be what most due, it’ll never do any job right. Same with gerber/leatherman. Good for small tasks, show, anything serious use the proper tools.
