Just got my recall notice for my rear leaf springs. My only question is, when they replace my old ones, will they reinstall my add a leaf with the new ones? When i bought the truck the previous owner said the add a leaf took all the stress away from the stock ones and it wouldn't be an issue.

No they will not put the AAL on your new springs. This is a safety recall so what is affected they must by law take off and replace with the new if you have modified such part then those modifications thus become part of the old.

If I were you I would take my AAL off go get the springs replaced put the AAL on. What the previous owner told you is incorrect about taking the stress off the spring. That was for the TSB on sagging springs. We are now onto a recall where the springs can crack and break then hit/rub the tire causing a blow out. An AAL will not help prevent this.

You may not even NEED the AAL after the springs are replaced. If you have 3-leaf springs, they should, I think, be replacing them with 4-leaf springs.
While most dealers probably will NOT reinstall the AAL, they are required to give it back to you as long as you make it clear to them that you want it back. The only parts that they are obligated to account for to Toyota, are the original leaf springs themselves.

Incorrect!!!!! Completely wrong info if a part is replaced due to a recall by law they are not allowed to give those parts back to the customer. Even if you added something to said part, that addition then becomes part of said recalled part if they take it off. Recall laws are very clear and dealers can get in huge legal issues if they do things like that. It is not toyota they are obligated to but the Fed which is completely different.

If he is lifted even with the 4 leaf pack he will still need the AAL to get the lift back the 4 leaf pack doesn't add any significant amount of lift to the truck.

No. That is entirely absurd, and would amount to THEFT.
If you ask for it back, they are OBLIGATED to give it back to you.

I had the the same situation, and the dealer said they'd reinstall my 3 leaf aal pack for $150 while performong the recall work. I declined and asked them to put AAL in the truck bed. Likely different depending on dealership.
The 3+1 recall pack seems just as weak as my old 2+1. Might have to put the aal back in.

Dude I have worked in this industry for 20 yrs at dealerships and all it is not obsurd it is LAW the gov't created safety recall laws to protect the consumer if you add extras to a part that is recalled and do not take it off before the part is replaced then that part ends up being considered part of the replaced part.
If the dealership did that they were doing something that they could get in trouble for and the service adviser didn't know any better.

I never had any problem with my 3+1 pack, as far as load bearing was concerned. The only problem I ever had from it was when a leaf actually *snapped*.

It *may* (uncertain) be illegal for them to REINSTALL it. Probably not actually illegal, but certainly is SKETCHY since installing something makes them liable for it. It is NOT illegal for them to give it back to you. It *IS* illegal for them to STEAL YOUR PROPERTY.

It sounds to me like your 20 years of stealership experience has resulted in you getting so used to lying to customers, that you're starting to believe the lies yourself.

Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, but here I go:

I have a 2008 SR5 2WD Tacoma and put my VIN in on the Toyota recall site. The site only shows a recall for the TPMS system (NHTSA Recall ID 11V148), and nothing about leaf springs. I know that the previous owner (my uncle) never had them replaced, and a check of the truck's service history through Toyota Owners shows nothing.

    My questions are three:

    • First, would the leaf spring issue appear on the recall site?

    • Do TSBs show on the recall site, or are they "hidden" from the consumer?

    • And, does the recall only apply to 4WD/PreRunner 2nd Gen Tacomas? I have a feeling that's what's going on here.

Sorry about my ignorance and thank you in advance!

Look I am not going to argue with you anymore about it. None of us took anything from any customer or lied to customers and you saying that is rediculous. I know the law you don't. If you care to be educated on the law NHSTA go read. It is not up to the dealership or manufacturer it is the gov't.

I hate when the un/illinformed pass on wrong info to the masses it makes it worse for the whole industry.

The leaf spring recall probably doesn't apply to yours. The "5 lug" rear spring configuration is very different than 4x4/prerunner.
TSB's are "hidden". They're not recalls and they are not obligated to perform them. What a TSB is, is a diagnostics/debugging tool. Basically, they are information sheets written up by Toyota that tell the dealership "if a customer complains about XXXX, then you are authorized to remedy it by doing YYYY".

TSB is different than a recall. TSB is just information give out to techs to be on the lookout for an issue. The leaf springs were initially a TSB for weak/sagging then some started snapping so they issued a safety recall. You can go on the NHSTA website and do a VIN search there as well for recalls. If there are any open recalls it should appear if it isn't go to your local dealership and inquire just to be certain. Sometimes those sites aren't updated as well as the dealer info system.

they are not authorized you still have to do diagnostics. TSB says that this is what we are seeing a lot to fix it but it may not be the reason why yours is having issues. Independent shops have access to these TSBs as well it is just to point you in the direction of where to look not to fix the car.
I am well above ignorance buddy. You are showing your ignorance by still putting misinformation out there now about TSBs thank you for continuing to create ignorance about the industry I appreciate it. :hattip:

Thanks :D:hattip:I appreciate your compliment! I'll continue to Lie to people since obviously you know it all and have read the laws and understand them and know the difference in a Recall and a TSB.
