    I don't know about the Tacoma but many vehicles have a vent hose very near the fuel filler port. That hose goes to the charcoal canister. If you fill the charcoal canister with fuel, it turns the charcoal into guacamole and can clog the evap system. This will cause poor performance as the fuel tank is no longer vented. This is why topping off the fuel tank is a bad idea. Fee free to correct me if I'm wrong.
