Any ideas on an exhaust or muffler for my 1st Gen 2.7 four banger?

I have a 2001 Tacoma regular cab with an automatic and a 2.7 engine. I am thinking about changing the exhaust from the cat back. At the very least, I would like to install a new muffler. Other than stock Toyota, what are guys using for a good sounding, replacement muffler? Does anybody make a stainless, cat back system for my Taco?

I recently replaced my rotted out TRD muffler with a Jones Turbine (previously Aero Turbine) and LOVE it. Sounds just like the TRD one did, not raspy, no drone. Although I have a V6, I think it would be a solid choice.

You won't get a better sound out of a 4 banger than factory quiet.

That doesn't look like a factory muffler in that pic.

    Probably true statement.

I put a Bosal stock replacement from my local parts house and it is definitely not as quiet as my stock muffler was. It is not obnoxious, not raspy and actually has a decent low tone to it. Can have a bit of a drone at 55 MPH.

Just put a fm40 on it and be done. That's what I run. Quiet till you unleash those 148hp then it gets a nice raspy tone.

Muffler in the pic already looks like some sort of flowmaster or other chambered muffler

I had a Flowmaster put on right after I bought the truck back in 2001. It kind of sounds like a wet fart. I am tired of the sound and I want something a little more pleasing to the ear.

It's a 4 banger, all your going to get is different variations of wet fart

Put a header on the 4cyl and the exh note will sound alot better . I'm running a Doug Thorley Shorty Tri Y # 511y1c on my 02 Tacoma DC Pre Runner . I was recommended this design header as I'm running a supercharger. This design help to quickly scavenge exh gasses and will make more hp , plus it has a high temp finish on it

Cylinders #1 and #4 share one collector and cylinders #2 and #3 share another collector

I'm also running a magna flow cat back and I've been told by friends the exh note doesn't sound like a 4cyl but more like a 6 cyl

I think I paid $450 for this header and its a direct bolt in requiring no modifications

Just checked Summit Racing and they've have that header listed at $329.00

A tri-y header like the Doug thorley is better for bottom end power, where as a long tube header will give a bit more top end power.

I have the cheapo pacesetter long tube on my 2.7 and definitely noticed some gains.

Listened to it on home sound system. Dude sound badass for a 4 banger. I'm starting to rebuild my truck from engine out now that I'm at 335000. Still going strong.

When I orginally was looking for an exh set up I came across that video . That's exactly the same sound my truck makes but added the supercharger for more noise

I'm not looking at noise as much. I'm wanting to get the most out of taking off stock setup. There are no inspection s here so for starters I don't plan on having catalytic converter any longer

The Thorley header and the Magnaflow exhaust look and sound real good. That is much better than the setup I am running at the moment. Thanks a bunch for the pictures and the info!! I had no idea there was a nice header available for the 2.7 four banger.

It appears the part number is: THY-511Y-1-C
