Hello there tacoma world. I am new to this forum. I just purchased a 2016 4door tacoma Trd off road. I have noticed at times while driving a very slight rhythmic humm. It is not noticeable all the time and does not coincide with the tire rotation so I don't think it is the Mickey Thompson Tires. Anyone have an inclination of what it could be?

What Mickey Thompson tire are you running? Aggressive tires will hum.

    Any other symptoms?

Needle bearing? Are you running a lift?

Drive down a straight road and listen for the hum. Flip on 4wd, does he hum go away? If yes then needle bearing. Easy $60 fix.

The Mickey Thompson's are the LT275 -70R18 it like I said the noise isn't always noticable. I will try putting in 4wd when the ice storm we're having is over.

If it happens when you feather the throttle then it may be the rear diff howl that many experience

Could be your rear diff. Others report a whirring or humming sound coming from the rear diff. There is a TSB for this

It's the drivers side front differential needle bearing. Do a search on the board it comes up often.

Not saying this is your issue just 1 thing it could be.

I had had a rhythmic hum also. Swapped out the needle bearing for the ECGS bushing yesterday. Took about 2.5 hours taking my time. Rides smooth as glass now. Just for information, I have a 1.5" lift and about 3200 miles on the truck.

I used this video as a install reference.

The needle bearing issue doesn’t cause a hum and is predominately prevalent in lifted vehicles. It causes a distinct vibration under acceleration.

Thanks everyone ...I believe it is lifted ...I...Ive only owned it a week ...traded in my Corolla when I went for an oil change. I am the second owner. It only has 14,000 miles and it sounds like (from some of the posts here ) that is when it starts to occurr.

I like some of the mods I've read about. I think the first one that I make will be shock assist struts for the hood.

Is it happening at around 2K RPM? If so, it's pretty common. It's harmonic vibrations from the engine. You'll feel a bit of vibration through the gas pedal and floor.
Some, my self included, have bolted dampeners to the exhaust with limited success. There's a thread somewhere on the site about it.

Just drove home from deer camp. While at camp I stayed up late last night and read the manual on all of the drive ssettings. This morning I put the truck in all of those setting and drove for about 5 minutes in each. I hit the highway to head home and the hum is gone.

Crank the radio up and drown out the hum,
Problem solved, when it stops and can’t go any more, trade it in on a new one.

So the rhythmic hum came back and got louder. It turned into like a moaning or grinding sound ...sounded like my truck had a heart beat. So I took it back to the dealer. Turns out there is a bulletin out on it.
The solution ...they changed out the whole front diff. Groaning is gone. The title of the bulletin is "cyclic groaning or grinding noise that stops when put in 4wd". The dealer took care of everything, gave me a brand new cannery as a loaner for the day. And completed the job in 3 or 4 hours. I have to say I am totally impressed with their service.
