My 82 lb. 4' 11" daughter seated in the passenger side seat will not allow the airbag (and airbag light) to be "armed." Even when I had her put her appx 15 lb. book bag on her lap, it would still not "arm." When myself or my wife are seated in the passenger side seat it will "arm." I checked the manual, no specific pound limitation only something about "sensing seating position" etc.

I'm a bit disappointed that Toyota believes the airbag may do more harm than good, especially since I have her put her seat all the way back to the stops. What happens to a female adult who doesn't weight enough (or tall enough??) to arm the airbags???

Not much the previous threads I found. Thoughts?? Info?

    Thanks all!

I think the minimum weight is around 100lbs.

What happens to a female adult is that newton's third law doesn't kill them with an airbag designed for someone that weighs more.

I dont know the required wt is, but Im sure Toyota would tell you if you called the USA number.

There could be something wrong, or there could be a higher trigger weight.

The trigger wt. Is 'possibly' a Federal number, because childern and small adults have been injured by bags.

Let us know what you learn

I then wonder, if it is only the front pax side bag that doesn't deploy? Hopefully the side curtain will (?).
Going to call and report back for sure. Something to consider when placing pax in seats.

    UPDATE:

JUST talked to Toyota USA for nearly 31 minutes (mostly on hold while she researched). A highly patient and VERY helpful rep checked the manual (as I did) and found nothing in the manual about a specific weight bearing on the pax side seat. She did reiterate what the manual says about other factors it looks at such as seatbelt on, feet flat on floor, position person is sitting, etc. to determine airbag deployment.

She is going to dig further and call me back today or Monday. She inferred that I -MAY- want to have my daughter (or anyone else who does not meet the tech requirements) sit in the back.

    HTH all . . . .

Just curious, did she confirm it is a weight sensor? I know on at least some vehicles it’s some electromagnetic sort of sensor. I know it’s something like that on my girlfriend’s Impreza, if I set my phone on the seat it sets it off.

She DID confirm a weight sensor along with the other mentioned items. No details otherwise.

No call back from Toyota like they promised. JUST wanted to follow-up. Will do so if more info comes available.
