I bought a used XL Big Green Egg off my neighbor that needed some rehab, but Im slowly getting it back in order. Had to replace some hinge hardware, was missing a grate and stand and the gasket was toast.

Watching some good videos, and reading tons...figured Id check in here for some advice on maybe what to try first!

And do yourself a favor and stock up on the lump charcoal in the red bag from Home Depot.

    That'd be Royal Oak brand.

Word to the wise, avoid the bag that was on the bottom of the pallet otherwise you'll wind up with a bunch of little chunks that makes it difficult to get a stable temperature for those low & slow cooks.

Dollar for dollar, I have been pleased with the Royal Oak; and it is easy to source here in CA.

Whoa, that is nice... gonna half'ta check that out. I've just got a couple of the old Maverick ET-73 I've been using for years. The probes die and I just order replacements.

I've got a friend that swears by the BGE Lump but I've been pleased with the Royal Oak and I find it on sale for $9.99 a bag at a local grocery store. When I can't get it at there I get it at Home Depot for like $12.00 a bag.

Oh, and for lighting the Lump I use a MAP torch... quick & easy.

Start with my buddy Ray Lampe, if you have not been watching his videos already.

He also has his own restaurant now. And it's close enough to enjoy periodically. :dancingbacon::broccoli:
