Need some rigging help. I’m used to throwing small dries & nymphs w/ a weight forward floating line during summer for stream trout or pan fish on lakes. Right now, it’s cold here & the lake has rainbows biting. When it got cold, I put the fly gear away. Last week or so, I’ve been using my spinning stuff & lures with pretty good luck but the fly fishing guys are killing it. I asked a few of them their set-ups. One says he is using a sinking tip w/ something about an inch long on end- wouldn’t show it to me. No strike indicator. Casting & casting & moving from shore. One day catches nothing, the next day limits in an hour. Most are constantly on the move- all fishing the shore. Some will talk about gear a little, some don’t want to give up their set-up. They are fishing 4-8 ft deep water & the strikes are happing about 12"-24” off bottom. Some are twitching the return, some are just steady pulling line in. The ones that caught the most in the least amount of time were the 2 guys who showed up with very long rods- 11 ft I’d guess. One talked a bit, the other tried to hide his stuff. Odd. Both are in a fly fishing club. The one guy who would talk, his rig was a sinking tip, the other line floating weight forward. Both had strike indicators- either a tiny bobber or some sort of flat disc on the line. They walk to end of dock. make a single cast out about 30 ft away & sit down & do nothing with line or fly. It’s just sitting there under a bobber with the 10 mph wind moving the float up & down w/ waves. No normal fly casting I’ve seen- just fling it out there & wait. Wouldn’t take long but they were getting some awesome hook-ups! They were hitting it like a freight train! Hell- they could have used a spinning set-up for that! None would share real details and were very secretive about their fly. I’ve never fly fished like this before. What are they doing & what do I need to rig up for this? These guys had some nice gear so they seem to know what they were doing. I have a Sage 9 ft 5/6 with same reel & a Orvis 8.5 ft 3/4 w/ Battenkill reel (bought both used). Help a buddy out. I’ve only been fly fishing for about a year.

Those guys sound like a bunch of assholes :)

Wind drifting under a small indicator works great.....my guess is they were fishing some kinda chironomid patterns..... the bobber was likely a thingamabobber and the disk was a palsa style https://www.cabelas.com/product/Pal...VRSaGCh0_bgEdEAQYBCABEgJIDvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The guy with the sink tip was prolly fishing a leech pattern with a hand twist retrieve.

The 11’ rod was likely for better roll casting from bank, i think a longer rod works better in a low profile float tube too

All this is conjecture tho, it could pay big dividends to ask these same questions at your local fly shop or on a local fishing forum or Facebook group

Last option would be to join the club, but the members seem unpleasant

Well, you were more helpful than they were! I think they had something in back of their truck- maybe float tubes but they never took them out. Probably using the gear they had. Yes- you are correct on the Palsa type indicators- the others were just tiny versions of the old school red & white bobbers. I always share my info with other fisherman. Always. I was shocked at their FU attitudes. Not friendly at all. All my fly info is on line as well as gear purchases- and videos. I live in mountains & the nearest fly shop is close to 1.5 hours away. No desire to join that group of people.

I'm in the market for a new euro nymphing rod. Currently am looking at the Echo Shadow II or a Syndicate P2 Pipeline. Looking at a 10 foot 3 wt.

    Anybody have any other suggestions?

Good fishing holes are like hemorrhoids, find one and there’s usually an asshole close by. Sorry you ran into those guys.

If the fly was about an inch long it very well could have been a balanced leach, I know a lot of Stillwater fly guys that swear by them, or possibly a large chironomid. Hardest part is finding the right depth to set the flies, typically very close to the bottom. I have friends that Stillwater fish an indicator and have the flies up to 20’ deep and they catch a ton of fish. Just get out there early and take their spot and catch a ton of fish.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
This video might have some incite on technique and fly choice. The environment is different but the technique sounds like what you are looking for.

When guys act like this my first inclination is that they are breaking a reg. But then because I am a sucker thinking that our species is good... I just assume they are overly protective of their successful efforts to figure something out and it's not personal.

One time while floating a river with a guide, randomly a college buddy floated by in a canoe (utterly mind blowing as we were out in the boonies). My buddy asked what we were using and the guide insta replied "black woolie bugger then told me "that's what I always say. No sense in giving away secrets "

We were using a black woolie bugger.

I’ll get there eventually. Waiting for the boy to grow up and learn more fly fishing before I venture up that way. I want him next to me fishing, on his own. I’m getting him more into it every year. He is wading in his “own” with dad right next to him, and is getting pretty good at casting. I figure about 4-5 more years and he’ll be ready.

I can't speak for Kangaroo Island (never been there) but Bondi is super crowded from sun up to sun down during the summer (our winter) so I don't think fishing would be that great. I did see a guy fishing the south end (very south) last year with a 18'+ pole from a folding ladder 30' out from the shore, so could be pretty fun. While you're there I do suggest going down to the figure eight pools just south of Sydney, one of the coolest places I've been to. There's a fantastic beach on the way there that you could fish while you're waiting for the tides to go out to get to the pools.
