I have a 2018 TRD Sport 4x4. I've never had a 4x4 and was wondering if when I get in if I can put it in 4wd hi right away and if I can reverse while in 4wd.

I suggest reading your owners manual so you become familiar with the operation on your new truck.

I did read the manual but what I saw made it sound like you had to put in 4wd hi while driving.

Yes, you can drive in reverse in 4WD.

You do not want to have it in 4WD while on pavement. You can damage your drive train that way. You can put it in 4WD while on dirt or gravel roads but you should really save it until you need it.... but try things out on a dirt road somewhere so you know how it works.

You can be in gear and moving when you go from 2WD to 4WD. Watch the symbol in your speedometer display. It will flash while the mode is shifting to 4WD or back to 2WD. It helps to shift more quickly between modes if you take your foot off the gas while the symbol is flashing. Once it quits flashing you are in 4WD. To get back to 2WD do the same -- just turn the dial, take your foot off the gas, and watch for the symbol to quit flashing and disappear.

4WD-Lo is a different story. To get all the way into 4WD-Lo you have to have the transmission in neutral. First you go to 4WD then push the button in and turn it a little more to get all the way down to 4WD-Lo.... make sure the transmission is in neutral or the truck will fuss at you. Once it is in 4WD-Lo you can shift out of neutral and into gear.

Get in some dirt somewhere and experiment with it now so you'll know how it works when you need it. Remember to get back into 2WD before getting on pavement.

:anonymous: I wouldn't either, but if I had questions like this I sure would have asked them for that instead of showing me the radio/phone features.

Read up on 4LO in your user manual. There are speed restrictions.

Just don't use 4WD on dry payment and in tight turns (like in a parking lot) and you'll be fine.

This. I told my salesman to drop my truck off at my house, but he said he couldn’t... because he couldn’t drive stick. I’m like yeah? Ok. You better pick me up then because there’s nobody to take me down there to get my truck. He picked me up in his Mercedes auto. On the drive down to the dealership, he told me he got the job as a Toyota salesman because he drove a forklift into a FEDEX AIRPLANE. So he walked across the street and applied at Toyota. Dudes... you can’t trust salesman at tech shit.

You CAN put it in 4WD HI on pavement if you are travelling down a straight road. You can shift into 4WD HI at any speed below 60 mph. You DO NOT want to make any sharp turns in 4WD on pavement as you will bind the system.

You are supposed to drive at least 10 miles in 4WD at least once a month. Since I can't make it off road all the time, I find a nice straight stretch of road and shift into 4WD HI.

All of this is in the manual.

My salesman didn't, and probably couldn't, explain how the 4 wheel drive system worked.
