That is Texas min. to be certifiable. Each dept. has other requirements after that. Most now require ICS 100, 200, and 700. And now Safe Traffic course, and Courage To Be Safe courses completed.

Advanced certs, time in service certs, and rescue or hazard mat training help you move up in hiring desirability.

In order to apply for a firefighter cert in Texas, you MUST be trained to a State EMS level. Most require EMT-B, but technically ECA is all fire commission requires.

Philadelphia Firefighter here. Great job and affordable housing. You only need a high school diploma and a driver’s license to start. All of your training happens in the Fire Academy (FF 1 and 2 and EMT-B). Starting pay is about 48k/yr. Full pay at 70k without Overtime. And, we get plenty of OT. You should make about 100K with OT after 5 yrs of service.

I’m with Phoenix, and it is similar to Philly for entry requirements other than your EMT cert. You need a high school diploma, CPAT, and EMT prior to your second round boards. Many candidates have their Fire 1&2 already, but it is not a necessity. Starting pay is the same, there is opportunity for advancement if you apply yourself.

I'm on the other coast(East Coast) compared to most of these replies, and in eastern NC wages start mid 30's plus OT and most departments require EMT-B in order to be hired. Cost of living is low comparative to many states and also plenty of opportunities to have a part time job to supplement income.

    We work 24's.

Raleigh is a pretty big department near me and they hire usually twice a year and have pretty good salary plus benefits etc..

Austin area firefighter here. I’ve been on for about three years and my wife and I make about the same amount of money. We don’t have kids, just three dogs. I work a fair amount of OT but the department has put me through advanced EMT school and also Paramedic school. We get cert pay for each level. Even with the cost of living we do well enough that we purchased our first home last year and we travel a bit. She has student loans but we don’t have any credit card debt. Take that for what it’s worth.

    Best time of my life!
Expect to have fun and have your ass handed to you if your not in shape.
Its very para-military so expect to be yelled at for everything. Also, our training was very crossfit inspired. Lots of running, stopping, picking up, running, dragging, push-ups, lifting.. stop, re-do.
Yes, sir/mam everyone, and our team leaders were chosen on the first day based on those who were in the best shape and ran back to help the dudes not in shape (every academy is different but food for thought).

I was unaware that I'm extremely claustrophobic. Found out reeeeeaal quick.. lol

Although it likely isn’t helpful to the OP I just thought I’d chime in.....Just started my 31st year on the job. Canada’s oldest City, Saint John NB (IAFF L771). Was lucky enough to get hired at 19, work a Ladder Truck in a busy part of town and have loved almost every minute of it. To those of you currently serving, be safe.....To those hoping to, good luck and go get it. You won’t regret it.

Once you get in all the “fun” years, and you’re ready for a retirement job.....get on with an industrial FD. That’s where the money is! We are considered kinda low on the pay scale, our guys bring in between 100k-175k depending on how much OT you wanna work.
