2011 Tundra - High Clearance Bumper Build

Mark brought down his 2011 Tundra for a new high clearance bumper yesterday. He had a few suggestions as to how it should look and what all he wanted incorporated.

Here's what we came up with.

- Main bumper structure - 6"x2"x3/16" rectangular tube
- 2" receiver
- Baja Designs flush mount LED's
- Recovery points integrated into the frame mounts
- Frame tie ins for the "wings"

At the end of the day he'll be gaining about 10" of rear ground clearance. First thing first is to get the frame plates built.

 

Interested to see how it turns out.

 

Here's my favorite way to figure out a bracket. Foam core is stiff enough to hold it shape while also being easy to cut.



Plenty of clearance between the bumper and the tailgate.



I might have gone a bit overkill with the 3/4" plate though.





The main tube is 6"x2"x3/16" wall.




The wings will also be made using the rectangular tube.

 

It pains me to blend nice welds, but this isn't the place for exposed welds. Also note the holes for the @Baja Designs flush mount lights.

 

I prefer a hidden hitch as opposed to one that hangs down to get hung up on obstacles. The pin hole and hook mounts are behind the face of the bumper and well out of the way. The power plug will also be tucked up behind the bumper.

 

Time to start on the high clearance wings.



I tacked the wings on and threw her onto the truck to see how things were fitting. We're getting closer.

 

The bumper is nearly finished. I have to wrap up a few welds and put some paint on her.

 

No bottle opener or high-lift jacking points?


Haha, looks good man. I'll get to see it in person when he gets it back.

 

Just slide the hilift under the bumper, and if he can't pop a bottle open somewhere on the bumper then he needs to reevaluate things a bit.

I'll be starting on the front bumper next week. That should be a fun one.

I didn't realize he was getting the front done as well. It's gonna look good!

 

The rear bumper is painted and installed. I needed to free up my jackstands for the front bumper mock-up, so it seemed like a good idea to put her on. What do you guys think?

The front bumper is coming along. I’m waiting on a few plasma cut pieces before I can wrap her up.

 

Final welding will be done tomorrow and then it’ll be time for a coat of paint.

 

I wrapped up the Tundra yesterday and my customer picked her up this evening. I'm pretty happy with how she turned out. So who's next?
