If getting the camper is going to provide security...$1K is not a bad price for it. Plus you've got additional shelter for unpredictable weather.

I've seen cable locks get cut with garden pruners and wire cutters. Not saying a chain offers much more protection to an even mildly equipped thief, but they at least have to work a little harder for it. Plus it takes more time, and using a pair of bolt cutters to break a chain isn't exactly inconspicuous.

agreed that's not a bad price at all. there's only one camper shell in the Portland, OR area in white and it's $1500 :-(

all this makes me so worried I just want to strap the damn bike to me everywhere I go hhahaha

So I somehow left my garage door open for 2.5 straight days, and discovered it last night. Its on the backside of the apartment building next to mine in the complex so I didn't notice. I can't tell you the ice water feeling in my veins when I came around the corner and the garage was open. SOMEHOW, all 3 of my bikes, my 3 pairs of skis, and a shitload of truck parts were still there. I must have gone out to check like 3 times the rest of the night that it was still closed.

FUCK... I've been there! BTW, i'm pretty certain we're the same person living in different places. I also have 3 bikes, only 2 pairs of skis, and a bunch of random parts in my garage + 2 stand up paddle boards.

I get that. If I lived in NYC or SF and I had to leave the bike outside, I would invest in something more stout. For me, it's just not worth lugging around heavy chains and potentially causing dings or dents to the frame. And frankly, if they are going to take it, I want them to take it with minimal damage to the truck or rack. Make it easier for them to cut through the cable than cut through the bed, tie down, or the rack. Otherwise, now I've got a stolen bike AND more $$ out of the pocket to fix whatever they damaged.

Honestly, though, I'm not really worried about it. I'll lock up the bikes and be smart of where I leave the truck. But if they take it, they take it. I'll file a claim and get a new bike.

Well I have my starter skis/now early season rock skis, my good Line Sick Days, and then I found a pair of 205x55 skinny skis from the 80s in my grandparents attic. They are RAD AF

A cheap chain inside a bike inner tube is in my bed full time, and takes up little space, but I'm totally with you. I have insurance for a reason...and I wouldn't say no to a new bike or 3...

I'll be coming back from the Arctic Circle and passing through BC in late July. I wasn't planning on bringing my bike, but if you were gonna be taking your sabattical around that time, I might reconsider it again. Passing through Kelowna, Fernie, and Kamloops with no bike was a hard decision to make, but I had half a mind to find a demo shop while passing through.

    Renter's :(...but yes.

You could also look into something like a "valuable item" policy that a lot of InsCo's offer.
