I have always suspected that an electric motor at each wheel would allow crazy good clearance by removing the axles.

All depends on how it’s designed.

I still say a battery only vehicle is not meant for trail or over landing. Minimum it needs an onboard generator capable of providing full electric power Incase of full battery discharge.

There is also no driveshaft tunnel underneath giving more room inside.

    4'6" bed? Huh?
    This truck is cool.
If Toyota actually wanted to, they could already have a gamechanger on their hands.
How? Have the two front wheels of the Tacoma driven by electric motors and use a small 2.0 liter turbo to lighten the front end and power the rear end,
Have enough battery power for those 2 front wheels to create an electric only range of 20 miles.
When off roading, the truck runs on gasoline, and the front wheels again kick in for 3 or 4wd traction. 100% torque right away.
On the freeway, the gasoline engine does the work.
    Course Toyota won't do this.

Good point, but the concept is delicious. The torque is obscene. The possibilities of self recovery with a winch simultaneously controlled is just wow.

Back to reality....pass on this truck

And 4-wheel independent traction control with instant torque.

This truck is bad ass. I will anxiously await the day of electric trucks.
