Slash's First Home 'Build' and Questions

Thread changed to home 'build'. In quotes because it's a built home, I'll just be fixing up a few things and making it better.

Closed on December 28th, 2018!

Went ahead and snagged a Lowes Card for the 5% off or the 6 months no interest.



Things to Tackle:

• Rear Patio: Has sunk and cracked.
• Patio Door: Old and barely moves. Replace with something like this. (I feel like the price goes up every time I look at it...)
• Kitchen: New cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and removing the linoleum and installing nice tile.
• (FIXED) Upstairs Bathroom: Fix GFCI
• Garage: Workbenches (DONE) and shelving, New Garage doors and openers, redo the drywall (It's really bad. I'll have to upload photos.), paint and seal floors and concrete walls.
• Master Bathroom: Not sure what I'm gonna do yet. Possibly tile in a nicer shower.
• Basement: Temporary 'T' wall, with two doors to create two separate spaces (Studio and rented bedroom). Either pull out the drop ceiling completely, raise it, or leave it. Insulate and seal where ever the drafts are coming from above the drop ceiling.
• Basement Bathroom: COMPLETE overhaul. It's bad. Shower was done really poorly, and its all wallpaper and linoleum. Very dated.
• Laundry Room: Renovate to be nicer. Poorly drywalled, open portions of wall where the cat could get in and get trapped in the walls. Eventually replace dated HVAC system (1988).
• Exterior: Fill in any gaps/holes in exterior to prevent water and pest intrusion. Replace rotten fascia board. Replace all siding/soffit and gutters.
• Attic: Install some form of entry other than tiny access in closet, and put down plywood so it can be used for long term storage.
• Security: Door chimes, and cameras.
• Game/Computer Room: Made a half door for air circulation and to keep cats out.
• Master Bedroom: Fix weird hole in the closet that goes through the backside of the tub faucet in hallway bathroom...
• And probably more to come...

Currently:
Living in for over a 3 years now, having issues with water pooling in garage. Suspected foundation issue.

I dont know a lot about it but it looks like it would be too much draw if you had anything else like you want in the panel. Basically 30 spaces would need to add up to 200amp including the welder. you arent going to get much with 20amp after the welder if that makes sense. You should run a dedicated 200amp panel for the welder then a 30-space panel for the other stuff. Others can chime in but thats a start...or at least how I'd look at it.

 

Yeah I didn't know if 200 amp is per circuit or max draw for the whole panel. Or if I actually need to have a 180 amp. I'm coming into this with zero knowledge, my dad(an Electrical Engineer with ~30 years exp in the trade and wired our family home when it was built in '94) will be there to help with the wire in if I don't decide to have an electrician just do it. Really depends on what one quotes for the job.

 

The actual input current at 230V for that welder is about 20 amps. You'll be fine with a 200 amp panel. The "180 amps" in the description is the welder output (at a voltage much less than 230V).

However, just because you install a 200 amp panel doesn't mean you have a 200 amp service. The amp rating of the main breaker or main fuses and the service entrance wire size is what defines the service amps. If you have a 200 amp main and #2/0 copper or #4/0 aluminum service entrance wires, then you have a 200 amp service.

Haha, nobody listens to me when I'm on the clock, so I thought I'd try dropping some knowledge on TW.

 

As long as the Sum Total of the Electrical Load at one time is no more then your Main 200 amp breaker you will be fine.

How often do you have all the electrical loads on at once I guess with some people it might be possible

As a after thought I have a main 200 Amp Service with a 200 amp panel being used as a sub panel in the shop fed by a 100 amp breaker allowing for breakers for all the goodies instead of plugging and unplugging all the time

Thanks! We actually had the date moved up and closed the 28th! Had some Taco Friends show up Saturday and got everything moved in!

Only one casualty. Had my red HF top load tool box get launched out at an f150. Paint is scuffed, parts tray bent, latch broken, but no tools lost that I could tell. I need to dig through everything and see if I lost any screw drivers. All the big stuff was there. Oh and the F150 was old and rusty and didn't have paint on its bumper anyway so I got off the hook after showing the guy there was no dents and no damage. He just got back in his truck like it never happened.

Scooped it up before the light changed, then the three of us hoisted it back in the trailer and made sure it was secured properly.

Only have a few more things to move.

Learned today that the taco is some kinda time machine because I moved what should be enough to triple my commute to work but somehow its the same??

Back to the topic at hand. Electrician was supposed to come check out the panel the 31st, but was a no show....

 

You had a sparky scheduled for New Years Eve?!?!? I know lots of sparkies, that guy was 3 sheets to the wind on the 29th, you’d be lucky if he answers his phone this Friday

 

Yeah lol. Also found out I have a GFCI next to the Master bathroom sink with no power.

 

Think I may just turn this into my home improvement thread. I have a lot of various questions and don't want to clutter the 'Home Improvement Today' thread.

 

When you do your new panel, not sure what code is in KC, but don’t let them talk you into the AFCI breakers unless you HAVE to, fucking things are overly sensitive and trip for no freaking reason

There are certain like unforgivable acts IMO that totally show a persons level of professionalism (or lack thereof). That is one.

I’m glad you made a thread on this. The house you bought would scare the shit out of me and I’m fairly handy. I’m really excited to see the transformation.

only thing missing

might check the bathroom nearest the master or all the other GFCI's it might just be tripped. Our house they wired the spare and master bath outlets together with GFCI's, if the spare gets popped the master goes out.

 

I'll have to check that!

It's a solid house. I could live fine in it the way it is, but it's human nature to want more! So, upgrades are inevitable.
